Sam Manicom left his job, sold his house and his belongings, aiming to ride a motorbike the length of Africa. He'd been riding a motorcycle for just 3 months by the time he made it to the Sahara. But once the travel bug bit, he couldn't stop. 'Under Asian Skies', like his first book 'Into Africa', is packed with adventure. He narrowly escapes a serious wipe out in the vast Australian Outback, falls critically ill in Thailand and is rescued by a prostitute, gets arrested in Madras, dodges the manic traffic of India's Grand Trunk Road and rides sheet ice on the roads through Turkey. With wonderful descriptions, what shines through is his sheer joy of being on the road, and the pure adrenaline buzz that each day can bring. Just one man, a motorcycle and a dream being lived — every day.
Sam says, 'Asia. The most diverse continent on Earth. Some of the world's most spectacular landscapes are there to explore, and many of the world's oldest cultures are there to see and learn from. The riding can be spectacular, and decidedly challenging but for me, it’s the people of any country that make travelling such a special thing to do. The one specific thing I hope never changes, is how amazingly welcoming and friendly the vast majority of people are to visitors to their lands. A motorcycle is a wonderful ice breaker between strangers.
To travel is to adventure. To adventure is to learn, and to make your journey by motorcycle is, quite simply, stupendous fun!
Ted Simon said, 'Under Asian Skies', it's a ‘A unique and wonderful adventure.’ If you too are able to ride across, your trip will be unparalleled – disregard how many travellers have passed that way before – your collection of exploits, your experiences, observations, disasters and discoveries will be unique. I hope you too will share your adventures.'This is the second book in the Every Day an Adventure Series. Into Africa is the first and Distant Suns and Tortillas to Totems are the third and fourth books.

This was my first time listening to one of Sam’s books, and I’m so glad I did. His storytelling pulled me in immediately. He doesn’t just describe riding a motorcycle across three continents — he makes you feel the dust, the discomfort, the uncertainty, and the wonder.
At times I caught myself thinking, “I’m glad it was him and not me.” From sleeping in rough accommodations with paper-thin, well-worn sheets to witnessing daily life along India’s rivers, Sam shares it all with honesty and respect. He doesn’t exaggerate — he simply tells it as it was.
I especially enjoy the way he highlights the ingenuity of people he meets — how problems get solved with whatever tools are available. It’s a reminder of the resilience and generosity found around the world.
If you enjoy real adventure, cultural insight, and storytelling that feels personal and genuine, this book is well worth your time. I’ll definitely be listening to more of his work.
