Publisher's summary

Veronica Mars meets The Craft when a teen girl investigates the suspicious deaths of three classmates and accidentally ends up bringing them back to life to form a hilariously unlikely - and unwilling - vigilante girl gang.

Meet teenage Wiccan Mila Flores, who truly could not care less what you think about her Doc Martens, her attitude, or her weight because she knows that, no matter what, her BFF Riley is right by her side.

So when Riley and Fairmont Academy mean girls June Phelan-Park and Dayton Nesseth die under suspicious circumstances, Mila refuses to believe everyone's explanation that her BFF was involved in a suicide pact. Instead, armed with a tube of lip gloss and an ancient grimoire, Mila does the unthinkable to uncover the truth: she brings the girls back to life.

Unfortunately, Riley, June, and Dayton have no recollection of their murders. But they do have unfinished business to attend to. Now, with only seven days until the spell wears off and the girls return to their graves, Mila must wrangle the distracted group of undead teens and work fast to discover their murderer...before the killer strikes again.

Critic reviews

"Witches get the spotlight and zombies are way more interesting than their Walking Dead relatives in this coming-of-age horror comedy...a breezy entry to the supernatural that also rewrites creature-feature rules in a smart way." (USA Today)

"A compelling mystery, a grimly funny fantasy, and a genuinely touching story of friendship." (Booklist)

"Mila’s sardonic, darkly humorous narration drives much of this book...but Anderson also couples Mila’s sarcasm with sincere grief, making an authentic picture of an outsider girl mourning the loss of her only friend." (BCCB)

Bless-ed Be clear the way for Zombie angst

This book took some perseverance before I actually wanted to continue with the story instead of throwing it away. It was the biggest bummer in the beginning and I wasn’t exactly dreaming of butterflies and rainbows to start.

Yes there are dead people. I don’t think you can call that a spoiler because after all the title does contain the word ‘undead’. This is no Walking Dead though more like Clueless combined with the Mean Girls if you replace Claire and the Plastics with rotting corpses.

The narrator did an ok job. Not one to come up with unique voices for each character. It was a straight read. No flare.

And just to clarify it’s ‘Bless-Ed Be’ not ‘Blesd Be’.

Great story. Great pacing. Great everything. This book won’t change your life, but it is an amazing wild ride while it last. I loved every minute.

Not what I expected

This book immediately plunged into controversial topics. It felt sac-religious at times. I forced myself to keep reading before making any judgements. Overall, the writing seemed poor and forced. But, I do see young adult themes that are important. If you look over all the high school/teenage drama and bs you might see what what the writer intended to teach you. While I’m fine reading Harry Potter or Dresden Files, this book made me uncomfortable. But the story finally grabbed me and I needed closure.

Great story of friends and forgiveness

Really enjoyed this book. Listened to it at any chance I could get if that tells you anything! I just couldn’t stop listening!

Story itself was very well done. Loved the main character. Kept me guessing what would happen next! Also had me laughing out loud at some points.

Fun teenage Supernatural Fantasy

Picked this book up on sale for less than $5.
I enjoy the occasional YA book when I'm in the mood for something light and fun. The narrator did a great job of sounding like a teenager. If you can pick it up on sale, it's worth the cost, don't know if I would've spent a credit it on it though.

Unexpected & edgy & fun

If you like deep feelings along with comedy horror and mystery you’ll like this book. If you like characters to not be what they seem it more than delivers.

Not your typical YA novel

Undead Girl Gang is unlike any other YA mystery you will ever read. This book follows Mila directly after the death of her best friend. She can’t bring herself to believe that she would have been lumped in to a suicide pact with two uptight girls like June and Dayton, and she is determined to find out what really happened. How you might ask, will Mila find out what really happened? Well with witchcraft of course!

Before Riley’s death, Mila and Riley were both known to perform a spell here or there. Not for anything serious, mostly for good grades without studying, or to have boys have crushes on them. So when Mila shoots for the big leagues to bring Riley back from the dead, it’s not surprising she has a bit of a hick up and ends up bringing June and Dayton back too.

Now that the girls are back, Mila has just seven days to work with them to try and jog their missing memories of what happened to them, and who murdered them! Following the girls and watching Mila grow as a person and make friends with someone other than Riley was so fun to watch. June and Dayton definitely seem like the type of stuck up preppy girls, but death changes people a lot.

I have to say, I’m usually one to guess things fairly quickly when it comes to a mystery in a YA book, but with this one I was surprised by how things went. I had suspected Riley’s ending, but June and Dayton was still kind of up in the air. I’m glad there were some twists and turns along the way to provide enough entertainment to keep me hooked.

Undead Girl Gang is honestly a must read of 2018. I’m so glad I picked this up as soon as it came out because not only is the cover gorgeous but the story is amazing. Mila will forever be one of my favorite protagonists, and you should give her a chance too!
