Publisher's Summary

Left a bequest by a woman with rare psychic powers, Eada of Pevensey suddenly finds herself in possession of a box containing a mysterious document...and something even more extraordinary: the gift of second sight. Now she can actually "see" her chilling fate: a Norman invader with sea-dark eyes riding across the fields to claim her lands...and her love.

A reluctant soldier for William the Conquerer, Drogo de Toulon seizes the Pevensey lands as a right of conquest...and meets a woman who defies him at every turn - and arouses uncontrollable desire. Yet now, as war rages across a divided England, the two lovers must find the bond that joins body and soul...as they chart a course through battle and betrayal that could break their hearts - or seal their passion for all time.

A Lovely Story

With the exception of a melodramatic ending, this was a great historical romance. The two main characters, Eada and Drogo, were engaging, and remarkable in that they remained devoted and loyal to each other as they faced one conflict after another. It was surprisingly refreshing not to have to suffer a couple bent on path of self-inflicted angst, as seems to be so commonly used to create conflict in other novels of this genre.

I hadn't listened to a book performed by Lulu Russell before this one. I think she did a great job, the only drawback was that she was that she read a bit too slowly for my taste. It wasn't a big deal, because I listened to it via my phone's Audible app, so I just sped up the playback. People who don't have the app, or another means to speed up the playback, might start feeling a bit impatient with her narration.

THE CONQUERER BECAME THE ONE CONQUERED

Once again Hannah Howell's writing captured me and thrust me back in time to Medieval Britain and there I became a willing observer of the invasion and ensuing war led by William the Conqueror and his army. However, amongst the backdrop of war and tragedy, betrayal, jealousy, secrets, murder, friendships and loyalty, I witnessed an enduring love slowly unfold.

Whilst the invaders were pillaging, plundering and raping Eada was visiting an old woman who gave her the gift of second sight and made predictions that all too quickly came true..... one being that a handsome Norman Knight would play a big part in her life. Drogo was that man and he tenderly claimed her for his own, although she tested his patience often but there were many battles, an evil enemy to fight and a King to crown before he could determine his own fate.

An enjoyable listen that had it's ups and downs as I didn't like Eada's attitude of not listening, not staying put and always mouthing off but the sweet, tender, passionate romance was worth it. The sex scenes were fairly mild (I like them a bit spicier), great secondary characters including other romances and no horses were harmed in the making of this complex compelling listen.

Worth a credit? There was so much squeezed into this captivating listen - so YES another credit well spent. But the narration was slow so if you don't have the facility to adjust the speed then listen to the sample and decide for yourselves.

Middle school attempt

Not only did the writing resemble that of a middle-schooler’s story, the narrator read with the emphasis of a middle-schooler. Really awful quality all the way around.

Long road trip that goes on and on.....

Very engaging in the beginning, story is well written and had a great potential but midway though it just stalled and became boring. There weren’t much romance just never ending road trip to London and Eada’s continual “visions” and “dreams” that kept everyone busy rescuing wounded Saxon soldiers, women and whole army of children. Not to mention heroines melodramatic and totally unrealistic gesture of leaving the hero and marching all the way back home. At the end I was so irritated by her I couldn’t wait for book to end. This is my least favourite book be Hannah Howell so far.

Good story

I really enjoy every book I've read by Hannah Howell. This book was no exception. With a strong female lead who complemented the strong male lead, this book had perfect balance.

Throughly Enjoyed This Book

First of all Lulu Russell was very good. This is my first time listening to her narrate. Second, this book had a very nice beginning of history and intrigue. I could see the characters in my mind's eye and that is important to me. The ending was not a surprise, but it is a HR book.

Alice in wonderland?

This book reads like a fairytale. I almost couldn't finish it. it was terrible. I'm not even sure a different narrator could have helped.
