Born into mystery. Shackled to darkness....

Khara has spent centuries discovering everything about the Underworld―except her place in it. But when she's ripped from her home, solving the riddle of her origins becomes more important than ever. With evil stalking her through the dark alleys of Detroit, she finds salvation from an unlikely source: a group of immortal warriors sworn to protect the city. Khara needs their help to unravel the tangled secrets of who and what she is—secrets many seem willing to kill for. But time is running out, and the closer she gets to the truth, the closer necessity binds her to an arrogant fallen angel.

Can their shaky alliance withstand that which threatens her, or will her soul fall victim to the unholy forces that hunt her―those that seek the Unborn?

Could have been better

The story is told in 1st person. She, Khara, is very one dimensional. Her mantra is if she has to die she is ready. It would be something if she could go down fighting but she can't. She does not even have a sense of humor.

She is the daughter of Aries, who does not know she is alive and would kill her if he knew. Hermes is her guardian and she calls him father. She is the only female child of Aries and has no fighting skills. For some reason she is thrown from the Underworld and arrives in Detroit.

Being a Detroiter, I was offended with it being depicted as a cesspool for supernatural. But I got over that one. It is a supernatural/fantasy novel. The places mentioned are real places in the city which are abandon and perfect for the supernatural to hang out.

The story would be more interesting if it was about the brothers. Her brothers are the "police" of the supernatural beings in Detroit. She becomes an albatross for them to protect. I guess crime is down because for the 8 hours and 17 min they do nothing but keep her alive.

Of course there is the moody male character whom Khara despises right off the bat. Of course that is a recipe for the hate/love romance. Fortunately we are spared that scenario, but we do have those close moments.

The pertinent questions of her situation are never answered. Outside of her sprouting wings and killing 2 people, she adds nothing to the story. After 8 hours and 17 min. you still have no answers to the questions.

I only gave it 3 stars because I liked her brothers and their unique fighting skills. Aries "beds" various types of women to produce kids with unique skill sets. If you are looking for a strong kick ass female, this is not the one.

Very Bad

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

The narrator was excellent with good voice characterization. The story had some good ideas that would have been much better developed if there was a co-writer.

What was most disappointing about Amber Lynn Natusch’s story?

The main character was as interesting as a log rotting in a bog. The poor logic and plot development made absolutely no sense. Preposterous character behavior made me frequently wince.

What about Angela Dawe’s performance did you like?

One of the best female narrators with a pleasant presentation.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Unborn?

Almost everything that made no sense. From the main character being brought into danger by her brothers, to every time " I'm not afraid to die" is spoken.

Any additional comments?

UGH!

This is gonna be good.

Would you listen to Unborn again? Why?

Yep. The story and characters are great. The narrator takes a little getting used to but she truly brings life to the characters.

What other book might you compare Unborn to and why?

None yet. It's in a league of its own for now.

Have you listened to any of Angela Dawe’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I think I may have but I don't remember. But, I loved it.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes. I felt very enthralled and excited. It's going to be good.

Any additional comments?

This is another series I am looking forward to. I follow Amber Natusch on Facebook and she seems very passionate about her stories and what other people think about them. This book is very well written with good word usage and syntax. I loved the characters. Especially Oz and Ivy.

Easy to listen to.

All and all the story was easy to listen to and kept my attention. I am going to download the second book in the series and listen to it straight away.

excellently written--strong story-a thumbs up book

I took this book on a whim--I was not disappointed. The story was compelling, and well structured. Every step in the story pulls you to the next. Characters are interesting, and hold your interest to want to learn more. It is not my normal choice of books, but I'm so happy I did read it. Now I need Book 2.

Loved this supernatural/Greek God world tale

Unborn
Unborn, Book 1
By: Amber Lynn Natusch
Narrated by: Angela Dawe
I really liked this book! It has Greek gods, angels, demons, creatures of different kinds, and wonderful characters coming together in a great plot. A girl born from an angel and Ares is raised in secret in Underworld by Hades. Hades loves the girl like his own. But she is stolen by the Fallen when she is a teen. She is dropped off in Detroit, (it must be like home, lol). It just so happens she finds out she has brothers there. So much happens and it is so exciting! Never a dull moment! Everyone seems to be after her!
The narrator is wonderful! She has to sound like someone that has been desensitized to all horrifying experiences and sights. She does it perfect. Great performance.

Worst story I’ve read!

There is no real story here! It’s more like a grouping of random actions posing as a story. There is no depth to the characters or surroundings that make a good story! I was dumbfounded that the writer could think that interactions between the characters could only be raging at each other. It’s a sad waste of time so don’t bother reading it. Very disappointing.

Interesting storyline and character development. Good plot and suspense of the unknown. Captivating book. Only gripe I have is the freaking cliffhanger ending. Aaarrrggghhhh!!!

Pleasant surprise

Although the story parameters make it sound familiar, it's different. It's intelligently written and I couldn't stop listening to it!

Give it a Go, And Hang in there!

I listened to the beginning of this story three times only to realised I have tuned out ... But the fourth time I listened I managed to get into it and loved the story as it picked up.

The main reason for buying this was that it is narrated by Tavia Gilbert, who is excellent when narrating any audiobook and really gives the characters life!

If you want some light listening ... This probably isn't a good choice however if you like Greek god/goddess influences and are in the the mood for something needing some concentration, I would hardily recommend this ... Only downside is that I would have loved to see the main character and her romantic counterpart having a bit more sexual tension and feeling, it was weak on the romantic parts for me ... But at least I didn't feel like I was listening to the karma sutra as I have felt like with other audiobooks.
