The first installment of Scott Westerfeld’s New York Times bestselling and award-winning Uglies series—a global phenomenon that started the dystopian trend.

Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can’t wait. In just a few weeks she’ll have the operation that will turn her from a repellent ugly into a stunningly attractive pretty. And as a pretty, she’ll be catapulted into a high-tech paradise where her only job is to have fun.

But Tally’s new friend Shay isn’t sure she wants to become a pretty. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty world—and it isn’t very pretty. The authorities offer Tally a choice: find her friend and turn her in, or never turn pretty at all. Tally’s choice will change her world forever.

I loved the story!! The plot was amazing and very well thought out. I enjoyed the characters--especially the main protagonist. Unlike any other main character in YA dystopian, in this series you watch Tally learn from her experiences and grow as a main character should. I listened to this audiobook (both narrations--2008 and 2015). I didn't like neither narrator; however, I preferred the 2008 version more just because the narrator has more personality.

This is definitely not ugly!

First book with audible, previous multiples with the book. Enjoyed the experience for the most part. I did find certain points to lack as much excitement as necessary, but having read the book previously, I probably am just a little too excited and read it loudly in my mind.
Definitely a nice experience though!

Always a pleasure!

Love the story and voice-actor. The voice reminds me of Clarke off of The 100, one of my all-time favorite characters, and that sort of voice is perfect for Tally who is also a strong, famale lead. I definitely recommend listening/reading this series...!

A great read/listen!

This is a post apocalyptic/ dystopian series based on the concept that if everybody was pretty, that would solve most of the conflicts in society. Here, once you turn 16, you undergo massive plastic surgery based on a team of doctor's decisions of what will make you attractive -- you can make requests but ultimately it's up to the committee. The Central concept is that society has destroyed itself, and this is a sort of Logan's run type of situation, small ultra high tech green communities where everyone's needs are met, and everyone is happy... only in this version people are allowed to age, as long as they undergo regular plastic surgeries to keep them looking good. That said, it's made pretty clear that once people undergo the surgery at 16 they become what the 15 year olds refer to as bubble heads. Suddenly all your friends become vapid and obsessed with having a good time, and pretty much either being drunk, stoned or sleeping til some point in their 20's where they undergo a 2nd surgery and remain kind of copacetic about everything (go with the flow and all that). Some 15 year olds however don't want that, and try to run away to join a society that's in the woods, referred to as "the smoke." Of course, this is a dystopian novel so it turns out not everything in the high tech world is as perfect as it seems and there's a government conspiracy afoot, and the surgeries aren't just about how you look. Pretty good book but it's dead obvious that the trilogy is actually ONE book broken up into 3 easily digestible bits because the YA market doesn't like big books

society where beauty is everything
