Voltaire (1694-1778), Frankreichs klarste Stimme im Zeitalter der Aufklärung, stellt in dieser Schrift den Satz "Alles ist gut" auf die Probe: "Ich bitte euch, ihr Herren, mir den Satz: Alles ist gut, zu erklären, denn ich verstehe ihn nicht."

Ähnlich wie in "Über das Gute und das Böse" und seinem satirischen Roman "Kandide oder der Optimismus", aber ganz anders angelegt, problematisiert Voltaire auch hier die Theodizeefrage, wie man die Welt aufgrund eines gütigen Schöpfers "gut" nenne, wo sie doch offenbar schlecht sei.
Seine meisterlich ironischen Verstehensbemühungen führen ihn durch die westliche und östliche Philosophie- und Religionsgeschichte von Platon an bis hin zu Leibniz, Shaftesbury und Pope. Schließlich gelangt er nicht nur zu viel Ernüchterung, sondern auch zu Hypothesen, die selbst ihn ehrfürchtig zurückschrecken lassen.
