It is said that on the internet you can be whoever you want to be.

For some, this is true in real life too and so it was for Mike Newitt. Facing financial ruin, the married father re-invented his life to be a secret agent of the Govt so convincingly that even his work colleagues and his wife believed him. But it didn't end well for Mike.

  • A Very Public Murder: Episode 451
    Jul 7 2025

This episode is from East Anglia and looks at the story of 17 year-old Amanda Wagg. Amanda had so much going for her in life, but she was being abused by her boyfriend 22 year-old Shaun Thrower and despite doing all she could to leave him, Thrower turned up at her work one normal Wednesday to make one final attempt to reunite with Amanda. The consequences were shocking.

This episode also reflects on the warning signs of coercive and controlling behaviour, and the importance of early intervention in situations involving young people and abuse. If you, or someone you know are suffering any form of abuse, you are not alone and help is available from Refuge and their free, 24 hour helpline: 0808 2000 247.
