Stranger Than Fiction meets Pirates of the Caribbean in this humorous genre-twisting adventure—where a man wakes up as the villain in his friend’s swashbuckling novel.

“A true masterpiece of the genre … an exhilarating romp, filled with delightful twists and turns.” —Kevin J. Anderson

“Both funny and profound.” —S.M. Stirling

The author has a plot, but the villain has other plans.

Mike de Wolf is a pianist on the verge of his big break—until his friend Horace Hackett casts him as the tragic villain in a swashbuckling pirate novel. The plot? Buccaneers, lost love, and a duel between a noble English rogue and a poetic Spanish admiral. The villain? Mike himself—reimagined as the brooding Miguel de Lobo.

A freak electrical accident propels Mike from 1940s New York into the magical realism of the 1640s Caribbean—an alternate history shaped by cannon fire, cutlasses, and the whims of a frustrated writer. Trapped inside Horace’s unfinished manuscript, Mike must navigate a world where fiction is fact, plot is fate, and a flame-haired beauty may yet break his heart.

Back in New York, Horace relentlessly plots the demise of the villainous de Lobo with no idea his best friend is living every word. If Mike wants to survive—or escape—he’ll have to outwit the plot itself … and possibly rewrite his own ending.

Typewriter in the Sky is a genre-bending classic of magical realism and alternate history, where the only way out of the story … may be to finish it.

I read this story about 25 years ago but this rendition made me realize that the god you invoke is the author of your life.

The detail of the battles

Loved it, it was one of the first books I really enjoyed as a kid. That's when I realized that I love to read.

It started like a fun story... just a fun story. And then, well, I didn’t expect the plot to go that direction and it was AMAZING.
The performance was great, too.
Starting the next audio book by L. Ron Hubbard in a moment. :)

Really unexpected!

I read this fiction story in order to better understand L Ron Hubbard's mind. If L Ron Hubbard truely wrote this then the story is both disturbing and pleasantly enjoyable. This book definitely gives insight into the mind of the person who created the Church of Scientology.

You have a main character controlled by the writings of a master mind who came into possession of a magical typewriter. And analougously to a memeber of Scientology. You have a cult member who came under the spell of LRH and his cult writings.

"Scientology is a joke. The founder of scientology L R H was a narcistic joke and the org is kept alive by people to stupid to know they are nothing more then cult victims. Happy Birthday you gigantic Joke." If I was going to give a birthday wish to the church of scientology this would be the birthday wish I would give. This book helped me understand L Ron Hubbard and I strongly suggest it as a fictional read because the reality of scientology plays out in the plot of the book.

"God in a dirty bathrobe ".Great story.

Narrator was brilliant except for when it came to the heroine. He could have been more consistent with accents, too. The story? Well, Hubbard was racist and sexist and that is apparent, and I knew that going in. Still was a bit jarring at times.

Could have been stunning
