Ava thinks love should be found in the real world, not on apps that filter men by height, job, or astrological sign. She believes in feelings, not algorithms. So after a recent breakup and dating app debacle, she decides to put love on hold and escapes to a remote writers' retreat in coastal Italy. At the retreat, she's not allowed to use her real name or reveal any personal information. When the neighboring martial arts retreat is canceled and a few of its attendees join their small writing community, Ava, now going by "Aria", meets "Dutch", a man who seems too good to be true.

Ayad Akhtar forges a new narrative voice to capture a country in which debt has ruined countless lives and the gods of finance rule, where immigrants live in fear, and where the nation's unhealed wounds wreak havoc around the world. Akhtar attempts to make sense of it all through the lens of a story about one family, from a heartland town in America to palatial suites in Central Europe to guerrilla lookouts in the mountains of Afghanistan, and spares no one - least of all himself - in the process.

In a sleepy seaside town in Maine, recently widowed Eveleth "Evvie" Drake rarely leaves her large, painfully empty house nearly a year after her husband’s death in a car crash. Everyone in town, even her best friend, Andy, thinks grief keeps her locked inside, and Evvie doesn’t correct them. Meanwhile, in New York City, Dean Tenney, former Major League pitcher and Andy’s childhood best friend, is wrestling with what miserable athletes living out their worst nightmares call the "yips": he can’t throw straight anymore, and, even worse, he can’t figure out why.

Fun, thoughtful, and motivating
The story grew on me. Initially I “didn’t like “ Zoe, and was unsure if I would continue listening. However as it progressed I be came engrossed and looked forward to hearing some more. I now believe that this was in someway almost a parallel of where the characters were personally, their unease with themselves and their lives, relationships. As they grew my connection to them grew, and like them I undertook some introspection. So lots of layers to enjoy. I didn’t choose the book on its subject , the Carmine, but now am looking forward to finding more about it, and other trails.

It took a while to get into this with all the various characters. Yet I persisted and found it both inspirational and entertaining. As someone who dreams of doing such a walk, I found that it has given me hope of doing so. At the end I really wanted the story to be real! Highly recommend...
