Story
A thousand years ago, something evil made a bold attempt to cross into this world. Now it's ready to try again. She's eternally young, lovely, and lethal. Her cry for help is heard by a teenage boy in Bermuda. A confused orphan in Montreal. A political prisoner in Poland. A raging paraplegic on the Pacific coast. And a bloodthirsty psychopath in New York City. Each of them is lost, confused, alone. Too weak to resist her siren call. They come cutting a path of carnage across the globe. And at last they meet. In a lonely mountain mansion. A place of unutterable evil

Story
His touch can heal or harm. His fate is solitary. His agony belongs to us all…He was born on a day of pain: November 22, 1963. He came of age in agony: that moment of tragedy when fun-loving rock-and-roll deejay Paul Handler discovered the inexplicable power in his own hands. It is the power to make the wounded whole again. The power to make the lame walk and to heal the sick. It is a power that will sap his soul and plunge him into the world of a famous faith healer. It is a power that can turn to rage, even murder. It is a gift that makes Paul Handler a living, breathing human sacrifice. For thousands of years, a secret cabal has guarded the lineage to which Paul is heir — scapegoats who have been forced to bear humanity's anguish upon themselves. Now, while the cabal searches for him, and one man seeks to destroy him, Paul makes a lonely, frightening journey to the core of his identity and to his destiny … to all the pain his soul can bear, to all the redemption he can give, to the freedom that is death.

Story
A suicidal nudist strolls into traffic. An eccentric Buddhist claims he can occupy other people's bodies. All the while, whispers of a new form of entertainment blow through town. Prompted by these strange occurrences, Marty Raft, a not-so-gentle giant, investigates and discovers underground clubs peddling music that induces an out-of-body experience. Marty and a wannabe comedian, Corey, set out to prove these special frequencies are nothing more than a hoax, or at worst, a mass-drugging. Instead, they uncover a secret with world-ending possibilities.

Story
Some stories tiptoe up and whisper in your ear - all sweetness and gumdrops and happy-ever-after-after-there-you-go. Then, there are the weird ones. We're talking talking-chickens, blue plague spam monkeys, tug boats of unbridled and fetid fecundity, tulwar-swinging cab drivers, malls that maul you, gnawing on screwdrivers and jig-lining elder gods coming at you faster than a ride-on mow-down massacre mower shopping cart caravan. This is a collection for the seriously messed up minds of all you listeners who have grown tired of the trite detritus of day-to-day storytelling.

The antique telephone sat in the darkness in the attic. Dust and cobwebs obscured its once gleaming surface. Wires hung limply from its rusted innards. It should have been nothing more than an interesting piece of junk. Except that sometimes, late at night, the occupants of the hotel rooms below swore they heard it ringing....

Story
On the day of his release from a mental institution, Pace is taken "hostage" by Faust, Pia, and Hayden, three escapees from the hospital who disappeared after the presumed rape and beating of Cassandra Kaltzas, daughter of the Greek munitions tycoon Alexandra Kaltzas. Each suffers from Multiple Personality Disorder, experiencing complex delusions and sometimes fantastical identities. Pace tries to piece together what happened when apparently one of their alternate personalities tried to kill Cassandra.

Publisher's Summary
Welcome to the hard streets.
These are four of the nastiest stories I have ever written.
- "Leftovers" - What's left of a man when everything worth losing has already been lost? Is vengeance worth any price? Ask Father Simon. Leftovers is a story of redemption, sacrifice, and leftovers. It is a story of the bottom and what you find lying beneath it. It is a novella-length story that will shock even the most hardened reader.
- "Statistic" - Just when you think you don't count anymore you come to the bridge and you find what you really are counted for.
- "Soul Survivor" - You didn't really think the devil was just after souls, now did you? This one is more weird than nasty but who cares? It all comes out in the wash....
- "Dopple Dribble" - A dark and nasty yarn about a man who is haunted by a basketball. This might sound a little goofy but once you get into this tale you are never going to sit comfortably when you hear the sound of a basketball being dribbled down the evening sidewalk.

Good Collection of Horror Shorts
This is a collection of short horror stories that were a lot of fun to listen to. I liked how they were all quite different from each other, and spanned a wide spectrum. Steve Vernon has an incredible imagination and he really shows it in these stories. These actually seemed quite tame compared to some of his other stories I have listened to. Leftovers was by far my favorite since a vengeful priest is one of the coolest ideas ever. Father Simon was a great character and I would love to hear his story in a full length novel. Ben Maclaine did a great job with the narration. I thought he really nailed Leftovers. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

Grief: The Uninvited Party Guest That Never Leaves
My patience is starting to ware thin with Steve. After listening to Capt Nothing, Vol One, I keep singing his praises, yet he keeps coming through with half A** efforts. The majority of this recording is his first story "Leftovers". It has nine chapters and it rambles something terrible. It is like he sits down to write and does not know where the story is going until he has enough words. Leftovers, had a good beginning and a good ending, but everything in between was just rambling bull sh*t. He will says things that are interesting in themselves, but when put in to context with the story, just don't fit.
The next two stories are average and short, which seems to be Steve's best length. Just as I am about ready to give up on the guy, comes "Dopple Dribble". This was a spooky story, that was very well written and renewed my faith in Steve's abilities.
As I have mentioned in other reviews, if you are interested in Steve Vernon, listen to Captain Nothing Vol One first. If you are a fan of South Park or Family Guy, you may like it. If you hate or don't get those shows then save your money.
This is very adult material and some will be very offended. This first story has a rape scene of a little boy that the main character knows is going to happen and lets happen, I did think that was over the line and not necessary.
I will try Vernon one more time, but please have a plot in your next story.
