Publisher's summary

In this first book in a new series, Thomas Pitt's son Daniel races to save his client from execution, setting him against London's Special Police Branch.

It's 1910, and Daniel Pitt is a reluctant lawyer who would prefer to follow in the footsteps of his detective father. When the biographer Russell Graves, who Daniel is helping defend, is sentenced to execution for the murder of his wife, Daniel's Pitt-family investigative instincts kick in, and he sets out to find the real killer.

With only 21 days before Graves is to be executed, Daniel learns that Graves is writing a biography of Victor Narraway, the former head of Special Branch and a close friend of the Pitts. And the stories don't shed a positive light. Is it possible someone is framing Graves to keep him from writing the biography-maybe even someone Daniel knows in Special Branch? The only answer, it seems, lies in the dead woman's corpse.

And so, with the help of some eccentric new acquaintances who don't mind bending the rules, Daniel delves into an underground world of dead bodies and double lives, unearthing scores of lies and conspiracies. As he struggles to balance his duty to the law with his duty to his family, the equal forces of justice and loyalty pull this lawyer-turned-detective in more directions than he imagined possible.

And amidst it all, his client's 21 days are ticking away.

New Follower of Daniel Pitt

as long time reader of Anne Perry I just started
The Daniel Pitt series. I was hooked from page one. So happy to see and hear about former
people from earlier books. I love all of them except for the last past. It just stops. Well she is the author and she keeps me coming back for more

Pitt Family Legacy Lives On

Pleased to return to Anne Perry and find Thomas and Charlotte's son Daniel as the protagonist. Loved court room scenes. Great "read" !

Good listen

I enjoyed the book. The characters were well developed and not too many as to be confusing. The timeframe of the book was when women were allowed to go to Cambridge but no degree given. Ugh! The twists and turns were fun.

Narration Top-Notch

I enjoy Anne Perry books and this one was no exception. I was glad that the son is grown up now and am looking forward to read his storyline.

One of the best things was the narration!! The narrator's voice made it so easy to listen to and was sad to hear it end!

Narration was terrible, but enjoyed the story.

Sadly, the narrator of this story made it so difficult to hear, follow, or enjoy this story. He needs some practice, maybe? I will not listen to another novel narrated by him. Anne Perry’s novel was very good in spite of the narrator.

Great start

Great start to a new series. Looking forward to the next book with Daniel Pitt.. It was interesting that his parents had cameo roles in this book; I would have missed them if they were left out. This proves to be an interesting new series.

Anne Perry does it again!

Once again, her story lines are so thorough and fascinating! I have read all of her books and grew up with Daniel and Jemima. So happy to hear that he is a successful attorney and has a series of his own. Great book!
