I wanted to love it
I wanted to love this book. The narrator was fantastic and the story well written. The problem I had was the story line. The first chapters are wonderful. Then, mean Aunt Ivy poisons the mouse and the rest of the book is spent with Ivy trying to kill the mice and the mice trying to get rid of Aunt Ivy. I will try another Tumtum and nutmeg after reading the story lines thoroughly. My kids are 8, 6, and 3. The 8 year old thought some of Ivy’s attempts to kill the mice were funny but my 6 year old didn’t. Overall I didn’t like that the majority of the book was spent trying to kill the sweetest characters in the story.

A bit heavy for a children's book
If I had read this book when I was a child, I would be forever frightened of mice. Seriously. The climate scenes are horrifying for the characters, both sides in fact. It's not a healthy book to be reading. Poison, scare tactic, guns? No. That was not what I was looking for in a children's book.
If you are looking for Beatrix Potter, Paddington, or A. A. Milne type of nice relaxing children's animals book, steer way clear of this one. It is depressing and somewhat terrifying even for an adult. Too dark and too much evil for a children's book.

A Delightful New Series
What did you love best about Tumtum and Nutmeg?
They are so cute and real..Nutmeg off in the kitchen and bustling round, and Tum Tum off in the library reading (and their nicknames for each other. I especially like the reference of Tum Tum's "tum"
The Story was a page turner but what surprised me is that I liked so much the terrible Aunty! She made me giggle a lot. It could have been horrifying (and was a bit) but she is so over the top you end of loving to hate her!
This will be a book fun to read over again
What other book might you compare Tumtum and Nutmeg to and why?
I dislike comparing books; apples are apples and oranges are oranges. But if you like anthropomorphic stories, you would probably like "The Wind in the Willows", which of course IS a classic, but for much more distant generation.
Have you listened to any of Bill Wallis’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No I haven't but I quite like his dialect and think it suits the story to a T.

A real gem
What made the experience of listening to Tumtum and Nutmeg the most enjoyable?
Bill Wallis' narration makes this one of those books you could happily fall asleep to. His voice just washes over you like a gently babbling brook and lulls you into a super relaxed state. He has a lovely west country lilt which just suits these two little mice and it doesn't take long to build a real rapport with the story. Such a shame other narrators don't have these skills.
What other book might you compare Tumtum and Nutmeg to, and why?
Tumtum and Nutmeg falls into that category of stories about animals who have human qualities, so fits well with Mouse and Mole (Joyce Dunbar). Is it on a par with Pooh? I'm not sure.
Which character – as performed by Bill Wallis – was your favourite?
They're all good. Very sensitively delivered.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I suppose so, but it's just as well rationed out chapter by chapter.
Any additional comments?
Hooray! :-)
