Paul W. Fairman (1916-1977) was the author of not one - but two stories for science fiction magazines that were later purchased and transformed into classic 1950s drive-in theater horror fare. Oddly both tales were published in the same year, 1953, two months apart. The first, "Deadly City" appeared in the March 1953 issue of Worlds of If, under Fairman's "Ivar Jorgensen" pseudonym; and was filmed as Target Earth (1954).

Historia
The US has been invaded - if many dozens of eyewitnesses are to be believed - by upright, canine creatures that look like traditional werewolves and act as if they own our woods, fields, and highways. Sightings from coast to coast dating back to the 1930s compel us to ask exactly what these beasts are, and what they want. Researcher, author, and newspaper reporter Linda S. Godfrey has been tracking the man-wolf since the early 1990s. In Real Wolfmen, she presents the only large-scale cataloging and investigation of reports of modern sightings of anomalous, upright canids.

Shapeshifters through history
In the enthralling audiobook "True Werewolves of History: From Ancient Times to the Present," author Donald F. Glut, accompanied by the engaging narration of Bill Jacobson, invites listeners on a captivating exploration of lycanthropy and shapeshifting throughout the annals of time. This unique compilation not only delves into the intriguing stories of werewolves but also unveils an array of other shape-shifting beings, creating a tapestry of mythical narratives that span centuries and cultures.
The title itself, with its ominous suggestion of reciting prayers when the wolfbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright, sets the stage for a spellbinding journey into the world of true monsters and the mysterious transformations that have both terrified and fascinated humanity. Glut weaves together a diverse array of tales, drawing on archival chronicles and cutting-edge research to resurrect the accounts of 100 werewolves, werebears, werejaguars, and other mythical creatures from across the globe.
One of the commendable aspects of the audiobook is its focus on real stories, dispelling any romanticized notions of shapeshifters. The listener is treated to a collection of narratives that stand as sworn accounts of lycanthropy, shedding light on historical figures who were believed to have undergone supernatural transformations. From St. Ronan to Sergeant Bertrand, the tales are as varied as the personalities that allegedly succumbed to the curse of becoming a werewolf.
The audiobook masterfully chronicles some of the most well-known cases of lycanthropy, creating a vivid tapestry that includes the wolves with human hands and feet, Pope Leo's encounters with witches, and the werewolf of Auvergne. Each story is a meticulously researched glimpse into the historical context, immersing the listener in a world where belief in werewolves was not just a figment of imagination but a genuine fear that gripped communities.
The inclusion of various other creatures that people were said to have transformed into, such as were-tigers, leopard-men, and were-hippos, adds a layer of richness to the narrative. Glut's exploration goes beyond werewolves, offering a comprehensive understanding of the diverse myths surrounding shapeshifters. The audiobook becomes a compendium of supernatural beings, each with its own set of captivating stories.
The narration by Bill Jacobson is a commendable complement to the material. Jacobson's clear and articulate delivery keeps the stories flowing seamlessly, ensuring that the listener remains immersed in the rich tapestry of historical accounts. His narration skillfully navigates through the quickfire snippets of information, providing a balanced and engaging listening experience.
While some listeners may express a desire for a more exclusive focus on werewolves, the audiobook's summary effectively communicates the breadth of its content. The inclusion of various shapeshifters adds depth to the exploration of mythical transformations, offering a broader perspective on the diverse cultural manifestations of these legends.
"True Werewolves of History" emerges as a compelling and informative audiobook that transports listeners into the realm of historical lycanthropy and shapeshifting. Donald F. Glut's meticulous research and Bill Jacobson's adept narration combine to create an immersive experience that will captivate anyone intrigued by the mysterious and supernatural. Whether you're a seasoned enthusiast or a newcomer to the world of shapeshifters, this audiobook is a valuable addition to your collection, providing a rich tapestry of historical tales that will linger in your thoughts long after the final chapter.

Werewolves
This book was not what I thought it would be at all. The story only gives half truths as well as goes off topic and talks about were-tigers, Kitsume, lougarou, and were-lions. The Loup-garou may also be known as a werewolf but can generally change into anything from a dog to an owl and, in some cases, a human. The story reads like an encyclopedia of news articles where it really doesn't get to the heart of the matter.
I received this book for free upon my request, and I wish I didn't. This is my honest opinion that I am voluntarily leaving.

True Werewolves of History
This is an interesting collection of stories about not only werewolves but many other were shifters as well. These stories are all short and move along quickly. As the title states these are all stories from the past and history. This book compiles many old stories together for readers and listeners to enjoy together. There is no romancing or embellishing shifters here, the stories are just told and you can make your own conclusions. I would have liked the book to concentrate more on werewolves than all the other shifters that were included. If you enjoy shifter stories that do not romanticize them and look to the history of werewolves and other shifters this is a book that can help you begin your journey. Narrator Bill Jacobson speaks clearly and keeps the narration flowing.

Overall worth listening to but not exactly what you'd expect. Ventures off into myth & folklore to much. Relies on the retelling of stories several people removed. Narration is okay at best.
