Publisher's summary

Historical accounts of the undead who returned from the grave to drink human blood!

From the cobblestone streets of medieval Europe, across the vastness of Asia and the jungles of Africa, to the haunted forests of New England in the 20th century, the author brings his researches to life in over 50 narratives and case histories.

Have you ever wondered whether or not vampires actually exist? Whether they are merely folk tales or real creatures that walk the same world we do? Donald F. Glut's classic survey of the historical record provides food for thought and fascinating insights into the sanguinary world of True Vampires of History.

Donald F. Glut is a world-recognized authority on monsters. His books The Dinosaur Dictionary and Dinosaurs: The Encyclopedia were included by the American Library Association in their lists of best reference books of the year. And his The Dracula Book and The Frankenstein Catalog were both recipients of the annual Ann Radcliffe Award from the Count Dracula Society. In addition to hundreds of articles on monsters real and fictive, Glut’s other books include Classic Movie Monsters, Jurassic Classics: A Collection of Saurian Essays and Mesozoic Musings, The Frankenstein Legend, True Vampires of History, and True Werewolves of History. He has also written three vampire novels, directed and executive-produced three feature-length movies featuring Dracula, and regularly writes stories for Vampiress Carmilla magazine. He is probably best known for his novelization of the movie The Empire Strikes Back.

A book with some real bite

This book actually surprise me. Yes, it does say from Roman times to the present, but it doesn’t tell you or intimate exactly what you’re going to find when you start listening. For example, I had no idea there was fear that Caligula could return from the grave, and that he was one of the earliest possible vampires.

Yes, there are some standbys that you’re always going to hear about right Vlad Tepes and Elizabeth Bathory, but there are others, many more others, that you may or may not have heard of before.

This book details, each of them. I found it to be very informative and surprising and if you love vampires that could’ve existed in the real world this book will really blow your mind.

Ray Hopkins does a really wonderful job narrating he kept my interest and maybe even made me feel a little creeped out sometimes as he detailed things about what these supposed vampires had done to earn that title.

This is a nice historical book that provides a lot of information on the history of vampires in the real world. It is something I would’ve fascinated me as a child and kept my attention even as an adult.

True Vampires

I read my first Vampire book over 50 years ago and I still enjoy reading these tales. This book covers many supposed vampires throughout history from ancient Roman times until the recent past. Some of the tales are very short while others are more indepth.

The most famous of these historical figures is Vlad the Impaler, who inspired Dracula. I had read about some of the people featured in this collection, but there were a lot that were new to me. Some of the stories were more folklore, while others were factual depictions of serial killers.

If you enjoy the folklore surrounding Vampires, I recommend this book. The narrator did a good job, but I think I would have retained more from this book by reading it instead of listening. I was given the chance to listen to this book by the publisher and chose to review it.

Interesting...

You could probably search Google and find 99% of the content of this audiobook, but Why? This audiobook was well laid out and well researched. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

Lots of interesting historical accounts of events that made people believe in vampires and/or extended the legend of vampires. Are they real or not? That's up to you to decide...

I'll be listening to this one again!
