Publisher's Summary

This important audiobook combines authoritative information and humanitarian insight into the transsexual experience.

Filled with wisdom and understanding, this groundbreaking book paints a vivid portrait of conflicts transsexuals face on a daily basis - and the courage they must summon as they struggle to reveal their true being to themselves and others. True Selves offers valuable guidance for those who are struggling to understand these people and their situations.

Using real-life stories, actual letters, and other compelling examples, the authors give a clear understanding of what it means to be transsexual. They also give other useful advice, including how to deal compassionately with these commonly misunderstood individuals - by keeping an open heart; communicating fears, pain, and support; and respecting choices.

Very Helpful

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. Raised by a cross-dressing father (we were never allowed to talk about it), I never understood his experience. This book is a must for family members.

What does Coleen Marlo bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Marlo's reading of the book is disappointing at times, because she doesn't shift her voice to let you know when the narrative has changed. I bought a paper copy as well, so that I can make notes in important places.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The book presents the life experience of a transgendered individual. The story of childhood and adolescence is particularly heart-breaking. Society needs to understand the material presented in this book.

Any additional comments?

This book came too late for me - my father had already passed on - but I found in its pages traces of my father that helped me put his story together.

I had a couple issues but good and comprehensive

some of the information in this book is outdated, and a lot of it is generalized to speak to a larger audience. I'm speaking from the perspective of a transwoman myself when I say this. overall it's good and sheds a fair bit of light.

Accurate and inspiring

This book really hit home with what I experienced with my transition. The most important thing we, as transgender people want is for others understand why we endure the pain and loss just to experience something that 99.999% of the world takes for granted. Having your gender identity match their body.

Valuable in so many ways

Thank you for this detailed, clear, informative book! Hearing about these transgendered men and women ...what it's like for them growing up and through transition just broke my heart. I cried again and again with such compassion for their experience and courage. My spouse is embarking on the journey of transitioning. I have so many questions, worries and what ifs. This book has given me hope, understanding and compassion. Thank you for the examples of letters and how to share this news with friends, family and coworkers. I am inspired by all of your stories!
