There's a Sweet Spot With Anthologies

What made the experience of listening to True Crime Stories, Volume 5 the most enjoyable?

I am a True Crime reader from way back. Mostly dedicated one crime books, and there a lot of really good ones. I have mostly been disappointed with "anthology" style in this genre, too short, shallow, they don't give a sense of who the victims or perps are, and conclusions are often missing ...

Jack Rosewood hits the sweet spot with his True Crime anthology series. All that is missing in other such books, he incorporates in succinct manner. You get a feel for the individuals, a brief on why the police focused in on the guilt of the criminal and the outcome of the court cases.

Who was your favorite character and why?

There were a lot of crimes, I wouldn't call any of the bad guys "favorites" though. The likes of Scott Peterson, the Menendez brothers could be on the top of my list to hate the most, if that counts as an answer to the question.

Which scene was your favorite?

Not a scene per say, but the concise, thorough writing.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The finding of the victims especially Lacy Peterson and her unborn son.

Any additional comments?

This listen flew by too quickly. I will most definitely look into other Audible books by this author.

David L. White is a pretty terrific choice for his skill at bringing the stories to life. He added much to my enjoyment and attention to the book overall.

LOVE TRUE CRIME

Where does True Crime Stories, Volume 5 rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It is in the top for its category. I normally like more detail but the author hit the high points really well and makes you feel you at least get a good understanding of the crimes. I like this author a lot.

What does David L. White bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I like his voice and the way he reads

Captivating

This was a well written and well narrated anthology. I thought it would take me several days to finish as these stories are often so grizzly but this version was well put together. It mixed a great deal of details and case information. the transition music is just as scary as the stories. It's kind of scary that these type of anthologies are of so much interest but when you have stories like this that are well written and well narrated you can't help but be captivated.

Would you consider the audio edition of True Crime Stories, Volume 5 to be better than the print version?

Another good book by Jack Rosewood. This one has 12 stories about murder, most of which were pretty high profile, such as Laci Peterson murder. It is well written and well researched. Each story was complete, from murder to conviction. He gives information about the victim and the killer. Each chapter also talked about how that murder affected society. Each story was done well and very interesting, even ones that I already knew. It is a fast and easy read.

This was definitely one of my favorite books out of the series I ended up getting through it in one day.. It was a wide array of true crime cases all the way from Jack Kevorkian to the Lacy Peterson case. These books are great for the true crime enthusiast to hear new or old cases that might spark your interest.

Meh. Just a basic overview of some notable crimes

Is there anything you would change about this book?

This is not really a book I would recommend to lovers of true crime. The stories are quick recaps of crimes with very little detail regarding the crimes, their victims and perpetrators. Basically the same amount of information you would get from a well covered news story. Narration is bland and adds nothing to the crimes. If you are a hardcore true crime lover, you will not learn anything new here. Bummed I lost a credit on this one.

In this true crime anthology, experienced true crime author Jack Rosewood introduces his readers to 12 high profile murder cases. These cases are all notorious in their own way, some because of the involvement of celebrities (like NFL player Rae Carruth's conviction of the murder of his pregnant girlfriend or the Robert Blake case, in which the actor was accused and acquitted of murdering his wife), others because of their impact on society, politics and law (like the case of Jack Kevorkian aka Doctor Death or the Eva Dugan case, whose botched 1930 execution led to a change in the legislation regarding execution methods).

I found this book to be very interesting. For each case, the author gives a brief, but complete overview of the case, mentioning all important facts starting with the history of the persons involved and followed by a description of the crime and its circumstances, the trial and the aftermath. He provides his readers with the right amount of information, being thorough but at the same time to the point.

Another thing I really appreciated, was the fact that Jack told the stories with a lot of attention for the context in which they took place, describing the not to be underestimated role of the media covering the cases, using statistics and mentioning society's points of view on certain topics at the time of the crime, which had an important impact on how the cases were handled (for example the role of the anti-marijuana lobby in the Victor Licata axe murder case).

I listened to the audiobook version, narrated by David White. I enjoyed the narration, as it gave the book a very "true crime TV documentary" feel.

Overall, I definitely recommend this book to all true crime fans!
