Publisher's summary

A thrilling, fast-paced novel of romantic suspense from sensational New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Linda Howard.

For Morgan Yancy, an operative and team leader in a paramilitary group, nothing comes before his job. But when he’s ambushed and almost killed, his supervisor is determined to find out who’s after the members of his elite squad—and why. Due to worries that this unknown enemy will strike again, Morgan is sent to a remote location and told to lay low and stay vigilant. But between a tempting housemate he’s determined to protect and a deadly threat waiting in the shadows, keeping under the radar is proving to be his most dangerous mission yet.

The part-time police chief of a small West Virginian mountain town, Isabeau “Bo” Maran finally has her life figured out. She’s got friends, a dog, and a little money in the bank. Then Morgan Yancy shows up on her doorstep. Bo doesn’t need a mysterious man in her life—especially a troublemaker as enticing and secretive as Morgan.

The harder they fight the intense heat between them, the closer Morgan and Bo become, even though she knows he’s hiding from something. But discovering the truth could cost Bo more than she’s willing to give. And when Morgan’s cover is blown, it might just cost her life.

Good story

Good storyline, just a little too sappy for me. I'll definitely try another of her books.

It’s about the dog

Which I didn’t mind, but I’m a dog person. I feel like the narrator is from the Midwest? Such a nasal twang, makes the main character sound like Roseanne Barr whispering (I have the same affliction, takes one to know one. Then again, I’m not an Audible narrator). Yes the main character is the most boring woman on the planet. You come for the mystery, you stay for the dog.

I like Linda Howard a lot but didn't like the narr

Thought the story was good but she's had better narrators. The go to characters are very good.

Awards Deserved

Great characters, mystery, ICU, and small town setting humor. Tricks is the best Golden Retriever story since Midas in Open Season by the amazing Linda Howard! Thank you Linda Howard :-)) Just hope it wasn't you on that ventilator...

One of Linda Howard ‘s best

This book moves rapidly, I never got bored or tired of listening. Ms Eby is a good narrator. I am a fan on Howard’s books and this is one of her better ones.

Linda is on top again!! Awesome!

Finally, so happy to start reading. No other storyteller does it like Linda Howard. I didn't want this one to ever end. Loved the characters and Trixie.
Hope there is a sequel. Please write more like this1

Brilliant Golden Retriever, adventure, romance!

Small town police chief is an administrative position, until her hated step-brother decides to complicate things. The chief's carefully constructed new life begins to crumble.

Recovering from an assassination attempt is painful, and driving himself out to the back woods of West Virginia seems the only way to avoid another bullet. A professional warrior to the core, our hero seems to be slipping into a serious situation. It could be dangerous to his heart, and another surgery won't help.

A beautifully crafted story combining action and adventure with the steady process of self-knowledge and building trust.

Bad Language

Usually, I read these in print, so I can skip over bad language and other things that I don't care to read. Unfortunately, read aloud does not allow me to do this, so I returned the book. I do like the way the author develops strong characters though, and the story lines are usually pretty good, as were the cases with this book.
