Publisher's summary

One rainy morning in the winter of 1909, a man with an altogether average look about him quit his job at the London Morning Leader, kissed his wife and children goodbye, and took a train to Swansea in Wales, where he talked his way aboard a freighter bound for somewhere in the upper reaches of the Amazon. Three years later, Tomlinson published a book about his adventures. This book made him famous.

'The right good book,' says Mr. Tomlinson, 'is always a book of travel: it is about a life's journey.'

Good story, annoying narration

I have enjoyed reading a great many classic travel narration books spanning travel and exploration in the 18th and 19th century. This book is a really solid story and written with a splash of humor that reminded me of Twain. But, I found the his voice annoying which got in the way of the story. He read well but his vocal quality was off putting to me.

Good story, poor narration

This is a very entertaining and interesting story, particularly if you are familiar with some of the flora and fauna of the Amazon. But I might consider another production of this audiobook as the narrator's voice is highly distracting. His intonations seem out of place, and I find it hard to believe that he is the type of person to pull through such an arduous journey.

Great story, brilliant reading

This book tells a great story that deserves to be more widely known. As always, Frederick Davidson’s reading is brilliant.
