Publisher's Summary

The plan is simple. George and Ben have three weeks to cycle 1,000 miles from the bottom of England to the top of Scotland. There's just one small problem - they have no bikes, no clothes, no food, and no money. Setting off in just a pair of Union Jack boxer shorts, they attempt to rely on the generosity of the British public for everything from food to accommodation, clothes to shoes, and bikes to beer.

During the most extraordinary of challenges, George and Ben scavenge through rubbish bins, search for the Loch Ness monster, wash dishes, clean hotels, sing Christmas carols for food, swim in lakes, descend Cornish hills on children's bikes, and cook a barbecue for 30 old people in a field. They spend the night in a greenhouse, a canal boat, a posh hotel, an empty house, a pub, a tent in a car park, and a barn with a bull.

Through the course of their hysterical journey, they are clothed, fed, and sheltered by the generous people of Britain.

Hilarious adventure!

Just listened and followed the route in Google Maps. Even marked some places to visit. So much laugh and so many unbelievable meetings, pure kindness. And of course the main thing - I wondered so many times when they end up continuing solo but they never did, stayed together until the end in John o' Groats. Great fellows and great adventure!

A great book for driving

I spend a lot of time in the car, and this decidedly non-vehicular journey is a wonderful companion. Well read.

I recommended this to all my UK friends

It's so much fun, I laughed out loud several times, getting stares where ever I was. I feel like I know these guys like family now. This is witty and informative and heartwarming. I want to go to all the places they did, but by car. I'll probably wait a few months, then listen again.

Hilarious

Just the concept of a long distance bike trip in which you start out in only boxer shorts (no other clothes, money or even bikes) grabbed my attention. Then the book just sucked me in and I had a hard time putting it down. Thank you George for your story - I LOVED IT!

Travel and humor

The author and his best friend decide to bike from one tip of England to the other. They only have a few obstacles in the way: they don't have bikes..Or money. Or clothes.
Yes, they start their journey in their underpants, and travel along to see if they can depend on the kindness of strangers. I've listened to this multiple times and enjoy it every time.

What a fun journey!

I really enjoyed listening to this book. It made me reminisce of my own cycling journeys. Their trip was truly an adventure and I loved the extra challenge of doing it penniless. Wow! My hats off to them!!

Funny....funny....funny

What made the experience of listening to Free Country the most enjoyable?

George Mahood is a seriously funny bloke and to come up with this concept and then actually complete it makes for a fun ride!

What did you like best about this story?

His faith and his mates faith in human nature...plus the sense of humour is fabulous...

Have you listened to any of Kris Dyer’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No I have not, but he certainly brings the book to life...bouncy and jolly!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Every time they got something for nothing...we forget just how generous the people of Great Britain are...

Any additional comments?

Whenever I need cheering up I turn to this listen...it never fails to make me feel better.
Thanks George...

Good Book. Bad Performance.

This is a good book ruined by the narrator. His vocal performance follows a pattern.
This line ends with a his voice going up in tone. Now this line ends with his voice going down in tone. This line may go down about here, then back up towards this point. And this line will go up in tone here, & back down about here.
Up & down, up & down, up down. Arrghh.

A good book thoroughly spoiled.

Unbearable narrator!

The narrator made it so hard to concentrate on the story I couldn't even finish listening to the book. He had this awful repetitive 5 syllable singsong thing "du du du du daa, du du du du daa" what I heard of the story was ok, I might read the book someday
