Publisher's summary

Talented narrator John Malone does justice to this interesting, highly listenable, and engaging introduction to transgender issues.

Written by a social worker, popular educator, and member of the transgender community, this well-rounded resource combines an accessible portrait of transgenderism with a rich history of transgender life and its unique experiences of discrimination. Chapters introduce transgenderism and its psychological, physical, and social processes. They describe the coming out process and its effect on family and friends, the relationship between sexual orientation, and gender and the differences between transsexualism and lesser-known types of transgenderism.

The volume covers the characteristics of gender identity disorder/gender dysphoria and the development of the transgender movement. Each chapter explains how transgender individuals handle their gender identity, how others view it within the context of non-transgender society, and how the transitioning of genders is made possible. Featuring men who become women, women who become men, and those who live in between and beyond traditional classifications, this book is written for students, professionals, friends, and family members.

I’m transgender and really appreciate the work that went into this book. I wish everyone could listen to it. The world would be a much better place.

Information

Very informative for a person who is or is not trying to understand what transgender is in the world right now. Covering many things about the mental and physical aspect of it on a informative nature. Giving no side apart from what it is. Loved it.

Definitely a must for anyone with a trans lovedone

This book is a really clear and concise way to learn about the life of a trans person. My mom started reading this book to learn more after I came out as trans and I started reading it too. As a trans person myself I thought that this book was well written. It does mostly focus on trans men and women and not so much on trans identifying non-binary people.

Best Book Ever

Though a little bit dated as the transgender phenomenon has been and will continue to develop, as a trans person and a specialist I believe this is one of the best representations yet. However, “transgenderism” is not politically correct because it is a descriptive word like a disease. Simply replace that with transgender people, the transgender community, the trans identity, the trans phenomenon, etc.

Takes you from zero to hero in just 5 audible hrs!

Expertly written, expertly narrated! As a parent of a trans son, I thought I understood him well and was being supportive. This book taught me so much more. It made me a better parent. You can't or a price on that.

Thorough and informative

There were aspects that I had known but went into more detail along with other aspects I thought I knew but really misunderstood. Nicholas was great at explaining the differences and similarities for all types on the gender spectrum.
