Publisher's summary

The phrase "broken heart" belies the real trauma behind the all-too-common occurrence of infidelity. Psychologist Dennis Ortman likens the psychological aftermath of sexual betrayal to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in its origin and symptoms, including anxiety, irritability, rage, emotional numbing, and flashbacks. Using PTSD treatment as a model, Dr. Ortman will show you, step by step, how to:

  • Work through conflicting emotions
  • Understand yourself and your partner
  • Make important life decisions

Dr. Ortman sees recovery as a spiritual journey and draws on the wisdom of diverse faiths, from Christianity to Buddhism. He also offers exercises to deepen recovery, such as guided meditations and journaling, and explores heart-wrenchingly familiar case studies of couples struggling with monogamy. By the end of this book, you will have completed the six stages of healing and emerged with a whole heart, a full spirit, and the freedom to love again.

Religious Slant Takes Away from Seriousness

People suffering from something like being on the receiving end of infidelity (which is completely and totally devastating) do not want to hear some Buddhist monk nonsense. Not are Bible verses appropriate. And yes, I agree with other reviewers the fact that this author was a cheater is a total turn-off. This book is out your forgiving the one who turned your life completely upside down. Naturally the author fixates on that having been one himself.

Probably better in print

This book has a lot of numbered lists, and some of these bullets are very long. It is very easy to lose your place in the lists, and very difficult to navigate the list for reference. It just doesn’t lend well to an audiobook.

The book is read in a very monotonous tone.

Yiiikes

Lost me at "much like the Jewish people that can't forget the holocaust.."
Otherwise trite, predictable, sexist, and not healthy or worth time.

Life Changing!

Very helpful during this trying time. While, I am a single person, infidelity is indiscriminate and certainly impacted my life recently. Thanks for writing this book. It will definitely help me moving forward.

This Book Was My Saving Grace

Nearly 4 months in and it still hurts and I'm angry a lot. This book has allowed me to recognize this is normal and to have lots of grace with myself. This book has broken down so many feelings I'm experiencing and ones I wasn't even aware of. There were moments I would be bawling my eyes out while listening, but it felt like crying yourself out to a friend. I never felt blamed. I never felt judged. I felt heard. I'm still on the path towards forgiveness and healing but I feel like this book has helped me understand what that path will be like in a realistic manner so that I don't keep beating myself up for not getting to the end goal fast enough.

Read the Bible instead?

This book fell flat for me at a time where I really wanted to learn some coping skills for post-infidelity living. The author seemed to believe that he was a transcendent monk and really wanted to just quote the Bible. Useless for an agnostic like me.

Good food for thought.

Some religious references but not specific to any one religion. Helped with the process and reflection on myself. Also so good ways to ease my emotions.

Very blah…heavy on certain aspects being the problem.

Ended skipping forward to chapter 7. Very heavy on infidelity being the result of some sort of relationship error. Towards some of the “healing” chapters, it’s very heavy on divorces being the dominant outcome. I don’t really feel like this “transcending.” It’s more “you have to take responsibility for this and your reaction in this situation and what you caused.”

Narrator is decent. But the over all is very blah.
