DiAnn Mills
Best-selling and award-winning author DiAnn Mills delivers a heart-stopping story of dark secrets, desperate enemies, and dangerous lies.
Fifteen years ago, Shelby Pearce confessed to murdering her brother-in-law and was sent to prison. Now she’s out on parole and looking for a fresh start in the small town of Valleysburg, Texas. But starting over won’t be easy for an ex-con.
FBI Special Agent Denton McClure was a rookie fresh out of Quantico when he was first assigned the Pearce case. He’s always believed Shelby embezzled $500,000 from her brother-in-law’s account. So he’s going undercover to befriend Shelby, track down the missing money, and finally crack this case.
But as Denton gets closer to Shelby, he begins to have a trace of doubt about her guilt. Someone has Shelby in their crosshairs. It’s up to Denton to stop them before they silence Shelby - and the truth - forever.

I did not care for the way the villain was written. I thought the villain was a little too much, too in control all the time, and overly dramatic. The way she was voiced matched the writing so I did not care for this aspect of the book. I know people who are manipulative and almost sociopathic. They usually don’t get away with deception for that long.
I loved Shelby’s character. DiAnn Mills gave a credible character study of a child and then later a woman who was abused and manipulated. I kept thinking of the verse, “To obey is better than sacrifice,” and how it should have applied to her in her situation. I wish DiAnn Mills would have at least examined this aspect of Christian virtue as well as the forgiveness and mercy aspects. Eventually lies are revealed and confession is made, though, and it is a really beautiful scene in the book. Readers / listeners will have to make up their own minds.
I have read this book twice and listened two times as well I think. It is worth the time and money.
Beautiful Language

I was also a little stunned at how abrupt the story ended.
