Publisher's Summary

When you first think of the term "psychopath", the first thing that comes to mind for most people is the insane, insatiable serial killer. We expect the appearance of such a depraved individual to reflect the madness without. This couldn't be more wrong.

The reality is that the charming individual who keeps the door open to you at work all the time, the charismatic ex you've got that everyone loves - but behind closed doors, the college man who loved extreme sports, or even your surgeon, they're probably all psychopaths. And, unless you closely understand them and understand what you're looking for, it's unlikely you'll ever spot it.

Invisibility is the psychopathy's most disturbing element. Psychopaths must hide and understand how to do their real nature. They are qualified performers and imitators. After all, only if they can make us think that they are frank, authentic, and trustworthy can they dupe us. They have to come across as normal in order to do that.

Is it possible to identify a psychopath? Yes, if you learn the signs that can help you spot one.

So, what's really the psychopath? How do you know it? Are they hazardous? Or do we genuinely need them in the society? How do we understand if they're just a poor child or something worse could evolve? This book will guide you through history as psychopathy, how to acknowledge the signs, and what to do if you're ever in a partnership with one.

It also looks at new scientific developments and research into the condition, and profiles some of the ones that were truly evil - the world’s worst. Let’s hope your charming ex isn't one of those.

Really Incitful

This is great I’ve learnt a lot although much too late I underestimated how dangerous my psychopath partner was before I left him after another assault in April little did I know he had been secretly recording me provoking reactions I now have severe PTSD and am facing charges based on him setting me up and telling a huge amount of lies ... my family relations are destroyed which was helped along by my toxic mum .... the thing I’m struggling with is feeling victim blamed by my family, they have told me I have to forgive them for not knowing how to help me out of the relationship and let them decide when I can be part of the family and I have to promise never to have a PTSD reaction if they trigger me, when I express my feelings I’m ignored told I’m wrong and its.... I’ve been told to get over it .... I think this is the hardest thing how do you deal with this ignorant reaction from family ? I really struggle with being smeared by family and friends. Maybe some tips ? Or am I just wasting my time trying to explain domestic violence and PTSD ??? Why do families mob a victim and how do I make them see the truth ?

Top notch Author and Narrator

I hope this author writes more books because she is a great writer. The information is easy to understand, straight forward and full of practical uses. Replaying this book daily is helpful and keeps me on course.
The narrator did an excellent job presenting the information.
I am so impressed with this book that I will continue to search for more audio books by both the author and narrator.

This book provides valuable information

It is an easy Toxic Relations audio-book dealing with an interesting issue. This book gave me the ability to identify what was going on in my marriage, determine whether staying safe and sane was possible, and even resources on safely getting out. I still found the information powerful and wonderfully presented.

This is exactly what I am looking for! This book needs to be read by every counselor everywhere, but especially Christian ones. Too much ignorance about emotionally destructive marriages has prevailed for far too long, doing such ungodly damage to so many. This is an amazing book that offers so much more than I expected.

It gives us a practical and logical explanation

I am happy to pursue this guidebook. Moreover thanks to the author. This book won't apply to every single person's problems, but it 100% applied to my situation. So I think this is a massive audible book for me.

Interesting and full of wow, really, aha moments. Other than the knowledge you will gain from reading this book, you will also enjoy the way Kent has made it into a story.

A ton of Valuable information gathered in here

This book is a mostly entertaining, first hand account of Kiehl’s professional experiences studying criminal psychopaths. It is informative without getting too technical (though there is a heavy focus on Kiehl’s brain imagining work) and the listener will come away with both a sense of who/what constitutes a psychopath

This audible gave us a massive hint

It loses me when it delves deeply into scorecards for determining psychopathic tendencies. The level of detail would be more appropriate for a textbook, not a book targeting a broader audience.

It is an Intelligible and delighting audible

This book is essentially a career-focused autobiography of Kent Kiehl. A major chunk of the book is about is physical/political progress as a scientist. By the nature of the research, there is a lot of data accumulation with relatively little actual analysis (at least this is reinforced in the book).

Insights are unique and turn me perceive deeply

I am a retired speech pathologist who lead a crisis team of highly trained public school professionals who responded to situations where students with severe behavior disorders exhibited significant episodes of physical aggression, property destruction, self-injury and elopement. Many of these students had the classification of oppositional defiant disorder.

It gives us a practical and logical explanation

I heard Dr. Kiehl at a forensic conference last year and was so excited to hear about his work in more detail. This was exactly what I hoped for - a nice blend of detailed scientific information with plenty of behind the scenes of what it was like to do this pioneering work. If this is your field, as it is mine, there is a lot here to learn from, and if you’ve only seen the glossy media versions of psychopathology, there’s plenty here to entertain and challenge your preconceptions.

This is an absolutely amazing account of the scientific proof of physiological brain abnormalities in psychopaths! I found it very interesting and it left me wanting more information on Dr. Kiehl's studies. Great intellectual read!

A comprehensive guide to turning me feel deeply

Kept my attention more than most novels of it's kind. Gives details on the science behind psychopaths more than stories about psychopaths. Made me want to keep reading on this topic.

This was a terrific book about someone who professionally practices the field of abnormal psychology. As a "Criminal Minds" addict, I loved hearing the practical science behind psychological diagnoses.

There is a great deal with this audible

Let me count the ways! Learn to edit, for one. Pacing was slow, characters flat and one dimensional, too much information about irrelevant things (do we really need to know every detail about moving psychopaths from the prison to the hospital, including the author buying everybody donuts, and Starbucks coffee?) and not enough about people and things we should care about.
