Publisher's summary

Smarter in sixty minutes. Get smarter in just 60 minutes with in60Learning. Concise and elegantly written nonfiction audiobooks help you learn the core subject matter in 20 percent of the time that it takes to read a typical book. Life is short, so explore a multitude of fascinating historical, biographical, scientific, political, and financial topics in only an hour each.

Historians consider the Haitian Revolution the most successful slave revolt in all of history. Though many fought in the rebellion, one man ensured their victory: Toussaint Louverture. With his political savvy and leadership skills, this former slave helped the inhabitants of what was then called Saint Domingue to challenge their French oppressors. This book discusses what little historians know of this complicated historical leader who switched loyalties almost with the changing of the seasons. Learn about the life of this man who died in prison while his colony was just shy of the independence they could not have achieved without him.

All You Need to Know about the Haitian Revolution

This book was ideal for someone who knew almost nothing about Louverture or the Haitian Revolution. It provides basic facts and figures - enough to provide a good introduction and enough names and context to allow you to do more research if you need more in depth info.
Well worth your time.

A Little Known History

I had not heard of this being before listening to in60Learning's book. I found the story interesting. Once again, in60Learning proves themselves with the story of a little known historical figure. The only complaint I have with the narration was with it's editing. There were several times where the narrator repeated himself, like he forgot what he was saying or where he was at. However I did enjoy listening to Stuart Liam McConville. He has a pleasant voice and read at a nice pace. I felt I should be sitting in a classroom listening to a lecture (but in a good way).

I never knew!

This book provided a very interesting snapshot of Haitian history. I never knew that Haiti was the site of the only successful slave rebellion and Louverture was such an important part

Marred by technical issues

In60Learning usually does a good job on the technical sides of things, which is why this edition seems so jarring. It appears that there was an unfortunate level of background noise during the recording session, and at times it sounded like entirely different people narrating.

From an academic viewpoint, it's still as good quality as usual. Toussaint Louverture was a key player in the formation of Haiti and you'll get a good primer on his life; and thankfully in60Learning doesn't shy away from Louverture's failings (such as flip-flopping on issues).

Short and Informative

I enjoy listening to in60Learning's books, as they are often good summaries of events I am not familiar with. 'Toussaint Louverture' is one such production. While ostensibly about Louverture, it also provides a very broad-strokes rundown of the Haitian Revolution. Some of the books conclusions might be debatable, but that's half the fun of history.

There are a few narration issues, but nothing significant. McConville does a solid job narrating, although I found his style to be a little dry.

All in all this is a well produced and informative crash introduction to Toussaint Louverture and his influence on Haitian (and world) history. Obviously this is just the broadest survey of events, but it is a good place to discover a deeper interest in the subject.

I received a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Easy History

Toussaint Louverture: Leader of the Haitian Revolution. 60 minutes of easy learning about a very little known Haitian leader.
Very interesting - Though I did find the narrator spoke a little fast, there is a lot of information in this book and it is a complicated history too me - who knew nothing of Haitian history.

Great overview of the Haitian Revolution

In60 Learning is a great way to quickly learn something about a topic which you know very little. 60 minutes is not enough to give you an in depth look, but it's a cheap and quick way to get an overview and determine if you want to pick up that larger tome about the subject. They are well researched, and densely packed for such a small book. And for that alone, in60 learning books will likely always get my tick.

'Toussaint Louverture: Leader of the Haitian Revolution' tells the story leading up, during and after the Haitian revolution of the 1790's. While it is technically about Toussaint Louverture, and he is covered in detail, the scope of the book is more than that. It succinctly explains what else was going on in the world (french revolution, slavery etc) and how it affected Haiti at the time. It explains how the revolution happened, who was for it or opposed, and what has happened as a result of it - including subsequent attempts at revolution based on the Haitian one.

Narration by Stuart Liam McConville is good. clear, well paced. Easy and enjoyable to listen to.

Intriguing character study!

I never even knew that there was a Haitian Revolution! Very interesting bit of history surrounding a complex character.

This is well organized information presented in an engaging way by a first rate narrator. What more could you want, except more of it!
