Publisher's summary

In this revelatory, authoritative portrait of Donald J. Trump and the toxic family that made him, Mary L. Trump, a trained clinical psychologist and Donald’s only niece, shines a bright light on the dark history of their family in order to explain how her uncle became the man who now threatens the world’s health, economic security, and social fabric.

Mary Trump spent much of her childhood in her grandparents’ large, imposing house in the heart of Queens, where Donald and his four siblings grew up. She describes a nightmare of traumas, destructive relationships, and a tragic combination of neglect and abuse. She explains how specific events and general family patterns created the damaged man who currently occupies the Oval Office, including the strange and harmful relationship between Fred Trump and his two oldest sons, Fred, Jr., and Donald.

A firsthand witness to countless holiday meals and family interactions, Mary brings an incisive wit and unexpected humor to sometimes grim, often confounding family events. She recounts in unsparing detail everything from her uncle Donald’s place in the family spotlight and Ivana’s penchant for regifting to her grandmother’s frequent injuries and illnesses and the appalling way Donald, Fred Trump’s favorite son, dismissed and derided him when he began to succumb to Alzheimer’s.

Numerous pundits, armchair psychologists, and journalists have sought to parse Donald J. Trump’s lethal flaws. Mary L. Trump has the education, insight, and intimate familiarity needed to reveal what makes Donald, and the rest of her clan, tick. She alone can recount this fascinating, unnerving saga, not just because of her insider’s perspective but also because she is the only Trump willing to tell the truth about one of the world’s most powerful and dysfunctional families.

Great insights to the Trump family.

Interesting book giving the reasons behind motivations and fears that shaped our president’s weird personality.

Author does very well in keeping the Trump bashing concentrated to the beginning and end leaving the majority of the book to actual non interrupted history telling.

I think it be easy to give up on the book early as it first seems like just another whiny elitist academic who can’t accept any other power hierarchy than the one she herself is part of, but speed up or skip forward and it’s actually very intriguing.

Thank you

Sad that most of us especially New Yorkers know that all this is so true and all the Trump family has been ripping off this country since they put their feet on US soil. What a legacy you have and have the courage Mary to write this you are the only one with a soul. Well written

Well Done

Every American should read this. It makes me even more worried than I was in the first place, and I am Canadian.

So Good! :D

I've barely cracked this open and I've struggled to contain my laughter at times. It obviously mirrors the bizarre man we see on tv. Simply put, it's far better than I could have ever hoped for XD

WOW! A must read!!!

You don’t need a psychology degree to see that trump is mentally ill and has serious issues. Very excited to have this insight from an insider; a family member that witnessed trump’s behavior for so many years and is also a doctor in psychology.
Fantastic book!

Insightful

From word one of the story you hear echos in Fred Trump that ring even now in the current President. If you are looking for insight into the family and world that brought us one of the most inept and ego driven men to lead the world, this provides much of that insight. It is from the point of view of a daughter, granddaughter, niece. What her family meant to her, means to her, impacted her and now impacts the world. I've read reviews that this doesn't give "Political insight." No, it doesn't. But that's not the goal or message behind this. More an overview and drawing back the curtain into a world of mind games, deceit, selfishness, and in many ways tragedy. It is one point of view of likely many in the family "Trump." However it rings true at every word for anyone who's followed the rise of the family over the decades. It's a worthwhile read to get a better understanding of what the author herself has come through as part of said family, and the grooming and creation of Donald as a tool for his father, left behind and inept at Fred Trumps passing barely able to manage his own affairs and sacrificing wealth, friends and family in the process to maintain his own image and lifestyle. It is not the end all, end all of the tale. Again it's not meant to be. However I did find the reading enjoyable and the insights valuable in understanding how we've all gotten to where we are now.

Final 2 hours, excellent

Was not so excited by first 1/3 of the book. Actually mostly a kind of memoir to her father. But good background of how/why dysfunctional the family was/is. The last hour+, then epilog is worth the whole book. New details and insights into reasons for trumps behavior/reasoning. Coming from a family member with intimate knowledge then her education, Masters in Psychology, to back it up, Very powerful. Will listen again, so much packed into the ending. Her narration made it even more powerful.

A fair biography of a criminal

A well crafted biography of a dangerous man is an interesting read. She provided details about Trump’s childhood that shaped his person. One can feel sorry for his neglect if one did not know about his cruelty towards others. The whole family is hateful. I am frightened by the possibility of another term by this damaged, unfit, and amoral man. I can only hope that the country will finally see what he is, unworthy, greedy, criminally dishonest, misogynistic, racist, xenophobic, and ignorant of the real world.

Very Interesting!!!

I absolutely loved this book and I would suggest everyone to read it. Although there will be some people who will still keep their head stuck in the sand.

What insight...

Getting to see inside the family system that created a Donald Trump is enough to create a compassion I never thought possible. It also makes me realize the risk we are being exposed to as a country. I pray for us all!
