Fighting is the easiest part of war!
No one - friend or foe - wants to take on this band of marauders. After all, they don’t call them the Rat Bastards for nothing. But now this bunch of mavericks, once welded together into a crack fighting unit, is coming unstuck between battles. It’ll take the music of gunfire to bring the grimy gang back to life. And blood is the only life they know....

Editorial reviews
Listeners who enjoyed The Rat Bastards series in the 1980s might be more familiar with the name John Mackie than with Len Levinson, for Mackie was the original (pseudonymous) author of these novels about an eccentric US Army platoon in World War II’s Pacific Theater.
Two decades of Shakespearean stage acting is evidenced in Ray Porter’s articulate and deeply masculine voice, which invites listeners into a society of sergeants, colonels, and enlisted men about which one jacket-copy writer wrote: "You can’t kill ‘em, and you can’t take ‘em alive." Levinson himself, upon rereading this series, said that "the novels [now] seem incredibly ferocious, gory and profane, but I persist in believing that's the truth of war for ordinary soldiers at the front."
