Publisher's summary

Since bursting onto the scene in the mid '70s, the pop duo Captain and Tennille have long defined the sparkling, optimistic idea of everlasting love, both in their music and through their image as a happy and, seemingly, unbreakable couple. They were an irresistible pair to millions of fans all over the world, further underscored by the rousing "yes, we can!" gospel of their biggest hit, "Love Will Keep Us Together". But underneath the image was an entirely different story that the fans never saw: a woman who fought a lonely struggle against the controlling and often bizarre behavior of her emotionally inaccessible husband.

Toni Tennille: A Memoir is a visceral account of Toni Tennille's life from her childhood in the segregated South to her thrilling rise to fame in the world of pop music to where she is now: no longer one-half of a famed couple but a stronger woman for all she has experienced - both the good and the bad. Toni hopes that her story will help anyone who feels trapped in a toxic relationship realize that it is never too late to break away from it.

Critic reviews

"Thick with a Southern affect, [Tennille's] narration is as candid and raw as it is warmly honest. Her voicing, not surprisingly, is excellent and moving." ( AudioFile)

Tennille survived life with a Dragon

Where does Toni Tennille rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

top 10 percentile

Would you recommend Toni Tennille to your friends? Why or why not?

I would recommend this book to demonstrate a one-sided bias

What does Toni Tennille bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

emotional hypocrisy

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

schadenfreude

Any additional comments?

I would love to read Daryl Dragon's version of events. Especially his take on the 39 years of married life with Toni. If she endured all those years of a loveless marriage, then she must be as batty as she portrays him to be. Not a mention of a childless marriage. What about sleeping in separate rooms without touch or affection. If that was a problem for her, then she must be a very patient woman to put up with these circumstances for 39 years. I have a feeling that these two were a perfect match and that she dumped him after he was of no further use to her.

Better than a sleep app.

I enjoyed this book on audible. I put it on when I go to bed and fall asleep to it, waking on about chapter 14, Toni's voice is soothing and I would back track to a chapter I think I fell asleep to.
I wonder now what she's up to back in Az.

Good story

Interesting, especially if you resonate with the music industry. Very nostalgic and I even YouTubed some of their old TV shows.

Could this be a case of fraud??

Just curious if anyone, after they heard of the Captain & Tennille's break up if this was considered fraud to the public? Having been a big fan of theirs, they sure did hide their issues very well! Not even a whisper in the entertainment community! This is a very good book Toni.

Who knew?!

When Captain and Tennille came on the scene, I was 21 and immediately loved their sound and their breakout song, "Love Will Keep Us Together" instantly became my and my then-husband's song! Ha! That didn't work out and neither did the marriage of this duo, proving it takes a lot more than a song to keep anyone together! Lots of history here in an era in which I grew up, also in the south (my Little Rock to her Montgomery) and I found myself remembering lots of things from my childhood (even though I am 14 years younger than Toni).

What is truly sad about this story is that success certainly does not bring happiness and there is no such thing as "overnight success." Without giving anything away, I just hate that Toni Tennille went through so much hanging on to something that was never going to change ... well, never going to improve. The book ended on high note! I was captivated by this story from the first few paragraphs and watching this couple through the years, wanted to believe they were so much in love and that together they were living all those great songs ... unfortunately, that was not even close to the case.

I also love that she narrated the book. She did an excellent job and I just felt like she was the Toni I "knew and loved". I could easily listen to this one again.

Great memoir!

Anyone who thought they knew anything about Tony Tennille is about to have the record set straight. Superb storytelling and an excellent performance by the author. I felt like I was riding in a sidecar to her motorcycle journey through life. Thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the ride and it ended much too soon. One of those rare biographies where you walk away with a keen understanding of the person behind the public image.

Muskrat Moves

As a 70's kid I enjoyed the tv show and the music. I thought they had a storybook marriage until 2 years ago when The Captain died and the truth came out. I was curious and this book answered my questions. I feel bad she didn't get to experience a good relationship in her prime, but glad to hear she made it out ok.
