Publisher's Summary

The twelve-year rampage of "Missoula Mauler" Wayne Nance - and the shocking end to his murder spree

To his neighbors, Wayne Nance, a furniture mover from Missoula, Montana, appeared to be an affable, considerate, and trustworthy guy. No one knew that Nance was the "Missoula Mauler," a psychopath responsible for a series of sadistic sex slayings that rocked the idyllic town between 1974 and 1986.

Nance's only requirement for murder was accessibility - a preacher's wife, a teenage runaway, a female acquaintance, a married couple. Putting on a friendly façade, he could easily gain his victims' trust. Then, one September night, thirty-year-old Nance pushed his luck, preying on a couple who lived to tell the tale.

A true story with an incredible twist, written by former Wall Street Journal editor John Coston and complete with photos, To Kill and Kill Again reveals the disturbing compulsions of a charming serial killer who fooled everyone he knew, stumped the authorities, terrified a community, and nearly got away with it.

Great

I loved that it kept your attention throughout the book and didn't jump around stuck to the story point throughout. The ending is AMAZZZINNNGGG!!! Such a great book.

A personal connection

The death of one of my first friends is brought up over and over, which was hard to hear but I knew it would be mentioned. I remember Wayne Nance’s time here - we all called him the ice pick killer at the time. Definitely a hard listen.
Harder still was the stiff reader - he really needed to check on pronunciations - Pattee Canyon and Ronan for two examples.
This is still a hard listen years later - and Siobhan McGuinness murder is still unsolved.

Absolutely riveting!!!

I listen to a lot of true crime, and I hadn't heard of Wayne Nance before. If this were a drama, the ending would be criticised for being unbelievable. One of the few audiobooks I actually sat and listened too, instead of listening whilst doing chores or driving.

The Reader

Good story. The reader might put you to sleep. If you speed it up to 1.25x speed, it's way more tolerable

Loved this book!

This book was hard to stop listening to! I truly enjoyed learning about a serial killer from my home state. The narrator was perfect choice to tell the story!

Wow

This was a fantastic account of the true story behind Wayne Nance and his killer hobby. I greatly enjoyed listening to the narration and learning of the story as it happened. Having never heard of Missoula’s own serial killer, this was a great account of the terror that surrounded the small time during his reign.

Boring

I was hoping this book would be more suspenseful. It’s written like a story within a story within a story. The author starts one story then leads into another story then into another story. It’s frustrating and it kind of looses you. There a lot of just descriptions of people and places. I got bored.

Not bad...

Decent, fairly run-of-the-mill true crime, definitely better than some. Just one tiny, itsy, pedantic thing. Bugling elk aren't deep and sonorous. They're hilariously high pitched and whistle-y, totally at odds with how they look. The author clearly isn't from 'round these parts. :D

Well written, intriguing story

This book is worth a listen if you are a true crime fan. The narrator wasn’t the best choice, but wasn’t terrible. It took a couple chapters to get used to the deep, grating voice, but the story was good enough to overcome that. All in all, a good read.

A true crime must read

One twisted messed up human being. I thought the story was told brilliantly well, superb research and detail and a clever writing style that made the narrative flow really well, coupled with a top narrator and this is up there with one of the better true crime efforts. May the victims rest in peace.

good listen

i enjoyed this one, interesting story although I feel some areas would have been better with a little more detail. narrator was easy to listen to, no irritating put on voices for characters. got through it a lot quicker than i usually as i needed to know what he would do next.

An interesting character, but…

I’m a huge true crime fan and thought this was an interesting story. That said, it goes on for rather a long time and could easily have been had the length!

Better to read than listen to

The American narrator has the kind of husky, 80-a-day voice so overused in 70s' horror movie trailers and, yes, aftershave ads in the UK, which is fine up to a point but then becomes almost physically uncomfortable for the listener. Perhaps the horrific nature of what he is reading out didn't help, but a difficult combination to endure for this listener.

Great book.

Couldn’t stop listening. Would recommend this book. The fact that it’s a true story is freaky.

Stuff narration; standard true crime tale

This ain’t no In Cold Blood.

I genuinely wasn’t sure if the narration was human at times; It sounded like one of those online videos you can make yourself, a little robotic.

Perhaps it reads better as a book OR perhaps this isn’t my kind of true crime.

Quite dull overall.
