Publisher's Summary

Sixteen-year-old Kaye is a modern nomad. Fierce and independent, she travels from city to city with her mother’s rock band until an ominous attack forces Kaye back to her childhood home. There, amid the industrial, blue-collar New Jersey backdrop, Kaye soon finds herself an unwilling pawn in an ancient power struggle between two rival faerie kingdoms – a struggle that could very well mean her death.

Pace is hard to follow.

Often during the book I was confused as to where the characters were. The narrator almost seems to read new chapters like she was reading the next sentence. The action would pass from one location from another without much transition and if you are like me and listening to audiobook is something you do when you do something else then it's mighty confusing. Book wise this is ok but it doesn't translate well into audio. The story was alright but I might have enjoyed more if I could have followed the pace.

Listening for the First Time

I've read the book several times before, but I've never listened to it. The narrator was good at voices, but kind of shit at using the text to inform how she read something. For instance, if the text said, "Kaye said thoughtfully," after a sentence, the narrator wouldn't have paid attention to it. I found that quite jarring at times, although otherwise her reading was fairly good.

I love this book

I love this book! I have read it twice and now listened to it as well. It is one of my favorites. The narrator did a decent job.

Hated the voice acting

It was really hard to listen to the voice reading. It was a really great book, just the voice was...grating.

Story Hard to Get into, Narrator Very Dry

So, I'm a long time fantasy nerd and while Holly Black seems right up my alley, her books are usually a hit-or-miss for me. She's brilliant and strange, but sometimes it just doesn't do it for me. I've been struggling to get through Tithe for a year now, coming back now and then to try again. I want to like it... I just can't fall into the story.
I tried the audiobook in hopes that it would help get me through the slump. I was wrong. The narrator is extremely dry. Her inflections hardly change on dialogue, let alone the text. At first, for a brief moment, I thought I was hearing an robotic voice recording. I couldn't get far, so I'm not sure if it gets better.
Maybe next year, Tithe!

The contemporary setting made it come truly alive for me!

I was surprised at how much I liked this story! It’s much shorter than my usual epic fantasies and in a much more modern setting, but that made it truly come alive for me. It may even truly happen in life ;) A delightful read that stays with me long after I’ve finished. I hope there are more books that feature these enchanting characters! More dark knight, please!

great story!

I love that for once a female character has brains instead of relying totally on the male for not only physical but mental stability. my only complaint is the romance. It was good but it kind of made no sense why they had an attraction to one another nor did the author elaborate on it. based on how fast paced the story was and the fact that they only had three times that they had any time to be acquaintanted with one another. good story . will ready the rest maybe I have to read the next part to understand why they have such an attraction to one anothrr.

narrator choice doesn't match content

loved it, would have preferred a darker reader, as she was a bit to airy and bright for the content.

some jumping in a few chapters.

have always loved holly black
