Publisher's Summary

Sixteen-year-old Kaye is a modern nomad. Fierce and independent, she travels from city to city with her mother’s rock band until an ominous attack forces Kaye back to her childhood home. There, amid the industrial, blue-collar New Jersey backdrop, Kaye soon finds herself an unwilling pawn in an ancient power struggle between two rival faerie kingdoms – a struggle that could very well mean her death.

Listening for the First Time

I've read the book several times before, but I've never listened to it. The narrator was good at voices, but kind of shit at using the text to inform how she read something. For instance, if the text said, "Kaye said thoughtfully," after a sentence, the narrator wouldn't have paid attention to it. I found that quite jarring at times, although otherwise her reading was fairly good.

Pace is hard to follow.

Often during the book I was confused as to where the characters were. The narrator almost seems to read new chapters like she was reading the next sentence. The action would pass from one location from another without much transition and if you are like me and listening to audiobook is something you do when you do something else then it's mighty confusing. Book wise this is ok but it doesn't translate well into audio. The story was alright but I might have enjoyed more if I could have followed the pace.

I love this book! I have read it twice and now listened to it as well. It is one of my favorites. The narrator did a decent job.

It was really hard to listen to the voice reading. It was a really great book, just the voice was...grating.

great story!

I love that for once a female character has brains instead of relying totally on the male for not only physical but mental stability. my only complaint is the romance. It was good but it kind of made no sense why they had an attraction to one another nor did the author elaborate on it. based on how fast paced the story was and the fact that they only had three times that they had any time to be acquaintanted with one another. good story . will ready the rest maybe I have to read the next part to understand why they have such an attraction to one anothrr.

narrator choice doesn't match content

loved it, would have preferred a darker reader, as she was a bit to airy and bright for the content.

some jumping in a few chapters.

have always loved holly black

Beautiful pictures with a story line

Would you try another book from Holly Black and/or Kate Rudd?

I enjoyed Kate Rudd's narration, so yes. As for Holly Black, she writes with vivid pictures and has some great ideas. However, it took so long to get to the story and by the time I did, I was a bit bored with the book. I hung with it and I wonder about the next book, so maybe.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The ending was unsuspected. Holly Black has some great ideas, but getting to the next concept or story moment is sometimes disjointed and harsh. I wish she would take more time and make it a more fluid story line. You end up not liking the characters until the end and not really understanding their decisions or who they are all that much in this book. Maybe the second one helps with those issues?

What about Kate Rudd’s performance did you like?

Kate Rudd really gave the book's imagery a vivid photo. The book has wonderful images that are tangible and create ideas that are new to me. It is the characters that I wanted more of at the end of the book. Who are they really? I wanted to like them more, but found myself simply watching them as an observer versus cheering for them.

Do you think Tithe needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Yes, as the characters have more to say and there is clearly a sequel left to be written/read.

Any additional comments?

I read Holly Black's book because she is seen on the internet with Cassandra Clare often. I had hoped for that magical quality of Cassandra Clare's character development with new and interesting plot lines. That did not happen for me, but I may have been asking too much of Ms. Black and came with different expectations. Holly Black's book is insightful, creative, and has great imagery.

I thought I would like this but I was wrong. Will not continue the series.
