Publisher's Summary

She’s ditching her shapewear, owning her hormones, and letting her magic fly free.
Underestimate her. That’ll be fun.

It’s official. Miriam Feldman is killing it in the midlife crisis department. She’s mastered boredom, aced invisibility, and graduated Summa Cum Laude in smiling and playing nice in her post-divorce life. But when a drink with a “good guy” goes sideways, Miriam snaps, and in a cold dark rage, unleashes a rare and powerful shadow magic.

To make matters worse, her best friend goes missing, and Miri is thrust into a world of hidden magic, vampires, and a legacy of hatred aimed directly at her. Hard to say which is more dangerous, this spiderweb of supernatural power plays, the grumpy French wolf shifter she’s teamed up with, or Miri herself, kicking butt and rediscovering the woman who got lost along the way.

But lines get blurred in the shadows, and if she’s not careful, she could lose everyone she loves. She’ll have to turn her invisibility into strength, and pray they never see her coming.

Forty isn’t the new 20. It’s better.

Throwing Shade features a sassy, slow burn romance, and is perfect for fans of K.F. Breene, Darynda Jones, and Shannon Mayer. Get it now!

Throwing Shade by Deborah Wilde

Throwing Shade by Deborah Wilde
Paranormal women’s fiction. 1st book in the Magic After Midlife series.
Miriam is loving her 40’s. Until she discovers she has magic and she needs to use it to find her missing friend. Now she is working with a vampire, a wolf shifter and a golem but needs to keep the otherworld away from her daughter.

Humorous and entertaining. Much sarcasm, snark and hilarious comments like coming home from work and taking off her bra.
“Disco made everything better.”

I alternated between a paperback copy and an audiobook. The narrator was Croix Provence. I LOVED the audio version. It was upbeat, extremely well timed and included a wide variety of accents. I was occasionally confused on characters that sounded the same at times but overall the humor was infectious.

I love a woman taking back control of her life!

Miri is a smart, attractive, spunky woman with a teenage daughter, ex-husband, and best friend she adores. The relationship between her and her daughter is light-hearted, fun, and loving. She's now good friends with her ex-husband and they make a great example of raising a child together after divorce. Miri's been hiding her magic since she was 15 and it gets unleashed just in time to save her. Once it's out in the open, there's no putting it back again. She feels better than she ever has with it and her confidence and take charge attitude grows. When her best friend is kidnapped, she is drawn back into the magical world she has closed off since she was 15, and has to learn to navigate it and what the rules are now. With the help of a handsome wolf shifter, she goes on a journey to discover the truth about her bestie and what happened to her, determined to save her.
There are lots of laughs along the way and other great characters to meet and want to know more about.
The narration was excellent.
This story does involve Jewish lore, so if you're like me, and don't know much about it, it helped to look up more information on dybbuks. I paused my audiobook and read some articles on the lore. That helped me understand the plot of this book much better.
As always, Deborah Wilde, gives us characters we can laugh with and relate to on so many levels!

Great Read!

I love the fact the main character is a older woman! I feel like almost every book I read lately has a 18-25 year old as the lead - which is not a bad thing, but being 35 years old I found it so easy to relate to Miriam. I am a huge fan of Deborah and her quirky characters, she always finds a way to make her characters relatable - they are flawed but in a totally loveable way. I cannot wait to see the adventures that await in the following books! Oh and Kudos to Croix for the narration, Hollie has done a fantastic job narrating for Deborah's books in the past, but a new voice helps separate this series from the rest (which are also amazing!) and Croix did an amazing job!

Captivating new series

This series differs from Deborah's usual age demographic but she has written into the genre well. Miri is funny, sarcastic, and has life experience that she draws upon throughout the book. Laurent is an amazing supporting character, he's my current favourite of all her male characters.

I can't wait to see how things progress in the series.

Original and entertaining.

I have read / listened to a lot of Paranormal Women's Fiction ( PWF) books since the genre was formalized in February 2020. And Throwing Shade is one of the best I've found. The story is really original, the characters are interesting, likeable, and rather hilarious. There is so much potential for a good robust series, I can't wait for the next book.

Love everything Deborah writes!

Absolutely love everything Deborah writes. I love this new series with a heroine close to my own age. I think everyone likes seeing themselves in books. :)

As always, the characters are well - developed and I want more for every one of them!

The world - building is always top-notch. No exception here.

This isn't my favorite narrator. But she has a pleasant tone and is good at being a sassy, smart lead heroine.

Definitely recommend this book and can't wait for the rest of the series!

A great start to this new series. The chemistry between the main characters feels real. All the characters are interesting and like-able even the not so nice ones. I can’t wait to see where this story goes.

Narrator Sucks

I can't like the story because the narration is so unacceptable. I guess I need to read the book instead.

Exciting World

I love the world the author has created fir this series. With in depth relatable characters I couldn't help but be invested early on. The narrator did a fantastic job bringing the story to life with distinct character voices. I look forward to more by this author

I love Deborah’s work……

….so this is a difficult review for me to write.
I’ll start by saying I read this book prior to the audible version coming out and I have fallen in love with yet another fantastic, kick ass heroine.
I want to be Miri when I grow up.
She has spent years hiding her magic and blocking off a part of herself to protect the ones she loves, but after a dear friend goes missing all bets are off. Throw in a sexy french shifter, a few vampires and a rambunctious golem and you have a brilliant recipe for a wonderful book.
However, I struggled to listen to the story.
This narrator is new to me and maybe I’ve been spoilt in the past but I just couldn’t get into it.
I felt like the pace was hit & miss and some of the accents questionable.
It’s a shame because I really wanted to enjoy it but it won’t stop me reading the next instalment.

The beginning to another brilliant series by Deborah Wilde

Miriam Feldman is my age and has a secret. And she kicks ass. And makes choices that rattle her cozy little life. And I don't remember the last time I understood a character and related to them to such a level. The story and worldbuilding are amazing, complex, and gripping, and this is just the first book in the series. Can't wait to see what comes next.

Another great series

This is the start of a new series, and a brilliant one at that. It is narrated by Croix Provence, who did a great job of bringing the characters to life. I really like this author and so it’s a given that I would listen to this book, however it was so so much better than I could have hoped for and is now my favourite so far this year. The characters are wonderfully complex; I love how the story unfolds and causes Miriam to question her beliefs and values. She’s quick witted and an interesting, likeable character. Wilde has a talent for creating memorable and strong characters who feel real. Now onto Laurent, I wasn’t sure about the French accent at first but its definitely a grower, I ended up loving his dry wit. The romance element is a slow burn and compelling. Its paced perfectly throughout the book and you will want to continue with their story. It’s a fabulous start to a series and I cannot wait for the next instalment (it’s on pre-order already!). I would wholeheartedly recommend this book.

Fantastic new series

Thoroughly enjoyed this new fantasy series. Strong women characters. Interesting and engaging story. I wouldn't say no to a bit more happening with the love interest, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the next book.

Brilliant first in series

This is a another brilliant story form Deborah Wild.
Miriam is a Librarian at a law firm, Her life is in a rut. When she is attacked and her best friend Jude goes missing. Miriam has to call on her magic for the first time in years. She meet Laurent a wolf shifter. Can they work together to find Jude, protect her family and friend safe. The plot has lots of twists and turns and lots and lots of humour.
I enjoyed this book immensely and look forward to the next book in this series. The choice of narrator is excellent.

Not to my taste

I didn’t enjoy the story, the lead character or the narrator’s performance. I gave up after 2 hours, finding it lacking in humour, charm and intrigue
