Terrorists smuggle a nuclear bomb into Washington D.C. and detonate it during the State of the Union Address. Army veteran and congressional staffer Caden Westmore is in nearby Bethesda and watches as a mushroom cloud grows over the capital. The next day, as he drives away from the still burning city, he learns that another city has been destroyed and then another. America is under siege. Panic ensues and society starts to unravel. Through Many Fires is Kyle Pratt's third novel.

I have read a fair number of books with this premise - the US is attacked with (take your pick) nuclear weapons, a biological weapon, an EMP burst, a natural plague or some other disaster and things start to fall apart. This book is different from many of the others because the main character is not a "prepper" ready for whatever occurs, does not have some fortress in the mountains or woods and does not resemble Rambo. Instead he is an average person with an average family and is only trying to survive to find those he loves who are still alive. Of course he is not quite "average" in the sense that he is able to attach himself to what remains of one of the state governments, but he is no super hero.

About an hour into this book I came to the conclusion that it was going to be difficult getting through the entire story. The sound quality is fine but the reader is uninspired and the narration is bland and uninteresting. However about half way through the book I found myself interested enough to not want to put the book down as I wanted to know what happens to the main characters and, at the end of this volume, I seriously considered buying the next book, if only to see how the lives of the people turn out. The basic plot seems predictable enough and it is clear where the story is going, but it is not at all clear what will happen to those characters who are central to the lives of the main character, but not central to the overall theme of the book.

I have not (yet) purchased the next volume, but I gave this book 4 stars because I just might.

Interesting book, but uninspired reader

I truly enjoyed this one, really liked the way the characters were developed, their thoughts were expressed well and the narrater was totally enjoyable and expressed the characters well. Very much looking forward to the next book in this series at least I hope it's a series.
I recommend it to all.

Great Book can't wait for Part 2

Some reviews said it was a slow read, so I just sped up the narration to 1.05X and it sounded like the other Kevin Pierce narratives. Good story!

Better than expected at first.

This was an okay book although a lot of the things that happened and things the main character did are rather unrealistic, if that kind of thing bothers you. Not the greatest book but I did listen through the whole thing. The narrator talked too slow, I listened to it sped up on my ipod.

Unrealistic

We love this series without all the bad language. it's refreshing to find such a great book in this genre that even our daughter can listen to.

I enjoyed this story. I found Kyle Pratt's storytelling to be engaging and I always enjoy Kevin Pierce's narration. Once the protagonist gets home the story really comes together. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys this genre of fiction.

Good story, well written

I was fascinated by how plausible this book was. This could really happen and it is so, so scary to think that. The writing is detailed without being tedious, the characters realistic. I'm on to the next book in the series!

Mezmerized....

Although parts of the storyline are very plausible, I question why China even is involved, except to define the nature of the corrupt president. Otherwise, with our political divide becoming so red and blue I can see a power play growing out of a terrorist attack. I went ahead and bought the remaining four books I liked it so much.

Makes you think with our current divided America
