Publisher's summary

From beloved indie musician Andrew McMahon comes a searingly honest and beautifully written memoir about the challenges and triumphs of his life and career, as seen through the lens of his personal connection to three pianos.

Andrew McMahon grew up in sunny Southern California as a child prodigy, learning to play piano and write songs at a very early age, stunning schoolmates and teachers alike with his gift for performing and his unique ability to emotionally connect with audiences. McMahon would go on to become the lead singer and songwriter for Something Corporate and Jack's Mannequin, and to release his debut solo album, Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness, in 2014.

But behind this seemingly optimistic and quintessentially American story of big dreams come true lies a backdrop of overwhelming challenges that McMahon has faced - from a childhood defined by his father's struggle with addiction to his very public battle with leukemia in 2005 at the age of 23, as chronicled in the intensely personal documentary Dear Jack.

Overcoming those odds, McMahon has found solace and hope in the things that matter most, including family, the healing power of music and the one instrument he's always turned to: his piano. Three Pianos takes listeners on a beautifully rendered and bittersweet American journey, one filled with inspiration, heartbreak, and an unwavering commitment to shedding our past in order to create a better future.

Beautiful book

I remember the first time I saw Jack's mannequin in concert. I had never heard of them before but I was utterly captivated. After that, I made it my mission to listen to every Jack's Mannequin and Something Corporate song. Andrew's music got me through a lot of different experiences in my life. And that I am thankful for. Since then, I have been to three more of his shows including the 10 year anniversary show for the album Everything in Transit. That show was hands down one of my favorites I have ever been to. I am so glad he made this memoir. It was an absolute joy to listen to. My only complaint is that his voice does get a little monotoned at times. I loved the recurring piano music dispersed throughout this audiobook. Thank you Andrew for writing this!

A beautiful journey into the life of an inspiration to many

He has always been my favorite musician, and biggest inspiration for my own music. These stories make me aware of how much I did not know about his life, and how many ways it relates to my own life. It is beautifully written, I’ve always been in awe of his way with words.

Longtime fan

I fell in love with something corporate songs at 13 years old and have followed Andrew McMahon ever since. I have seen him many times live and have had the opportunity to hear stories of what brought various songs to life, etc. But, nothing is quiet like hearing the WHOLE story. Well written, poignant, relatable, and I think that even people who aren’t longtime fans will enjoy this book. Self awareness seems to be a gift of aging and I’m glad I grew up listening to such a talented artist. Thanks for sharing, Andrew.

Loved!

I’ve been a fan since 2004 so of course I loved this book. The background about his childhood struggles, adult addiction and delving deeper into his leukemia treatment was so meaningful. Could not have loved this book more -unless he were to release an extended cut :) Whether you grew up rocking to his music or you’ve had a major health problem, you will relate to the soul in this book.

Just wow!

Just when I didn’t think I could love him even more! I enjoyed hearing about his life, trials, and overcoming his demons in detail. I’ve always been a huge fan of his music, but this book helped me understand his lyrics more than I thought I did. It was so beautifully written and listening on audiobook it was wonderfully told. He speaks of his wife so reverently, it’s so touching. I can’t recommend Three Pianos enough.

Beautiful Story of Rising from the Ashes

Incredible story of resilience and overcoming many of life’s obstacles by one of the most beautiful storytellers. While known for his stunning lyrics, the pages of this book also flow like a song. If you’re a fan of any of his work, I highly recommend!
