Publisher's summary

Fans of acclaimed author Kendare Blake's Anna Dressed in Blood will devour her latest novel, a dark and inventive fantasy about three sisters who must fight to the death to become queen.

In every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born: three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.

But becoming the Queen Crowned isn't solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it's not just a game of win or lose...it's life or death. The night the sisters turn 16, the battle begins.

The last queen standing gets the crown.

Good, but hard to follow at first

In the beginning, I had a hard time following what was going on and keeping all the characters straight. I wish the reader gave the characters different voices. I didn't feel the reader was giving enough emotion to the story. I did find myself getting more into the story as it went along, rooting for each of the girls. Looking forward to the next book.

So Many Names...

Loved the book by the halfway mark. Started losing my sanity trying to figure everyone out. Who belongs where, does what and is tied to whom. Overall, a great series for people who love elements of magic and a GoT vibe.

Where was the story?

Incredibly disapponted in this book. It had great potential, and it was just slaughtered by an ending that should have been the climax, and a half assed main story. All in all the story was just a very long introduction, and nothing ever happened with what I believed from the description to be the main plot. A few kids falling in and out of love, and a build up to a potentially amazing story that was wasted in a horribley disappointing and abrupt cliff hanger.

Narration made this hard to get through.

The story was unique and interesting. However the reading is VERY monotone. So much so that it is impossible to tell if anyone in the book has good intentions. The way it is read makes every single character seem stiff and uncaring. I think I would have enjoyed the book if I read it my self. But it took far longer to get through than it should have.

Great YA Read!

Liked the idea/concept of this book and felt that it brought something different to the table with all of the other supernatural YA books that are out there. The narrator was a little flat at times, but overall enjoyed the story and performance!

Game of Thrones for middle school kids

Narrator was better than expected for a YA story. But that's were the good review ends. The idea of the story, 3 sister queens with different magical abilities must battle for a crown, sounds intriguing. Too bad the 3 " queens" are so weak and immature that they hardly hold interest. I have a huge issue with weak female characters ( Bella of Twilight- I'm looking your way) but THREE unlikeable female characters? ugh. Maybe YA novels like The Hunger Games and Divergent have put my expectations of well written female characters too high. If you enjoyed those books, this is not for you. If you like boy obsessed twits ,put down your dog eared Twilight copy ,and step right up.
