Publisher's summary

Much is misunderstood about the man who bequeathed us with a framework of what it means to be free and live in a democracy. As a Founding Father, Thomas Jefferson was instrumental in defining and disseminating what it meant to be an American before an America existed. Washington may have won the battles on the field, but Jefferson won the battles in our hearts. That is why he is still fondly remembered and cherished.

Born in Virginia, Jefferson lived a privileged life and received the best education money could buy. He was schooled in many languages and grew up under the force of a classical education. He learned to think for himself and conducted his affairs with dignity and grace.

This book leaves out most of what is commonly known about Jefferson and focuses on the environment he was raised in and the circumstances that guided his mind toward the accomplishment that bears his name. The battles he fought with himself had to do with things we take for granted on most days. His mind was filled with matters of freedom and elements of democracy. His love was reading, his challenge was writing, and he did both with distinction.

To understand America, one has to understand Jefferson. It is a course in citizenship.

Will the real Thomas Jefferson please stand?

I used this for research and found it very exacting and interesting. Listening it in tandem with two other biographical books on T. Jefferson made for a fulfilled understanding of a very humanized founding father.

old/new history

J.R. MacGregor is a gifted writer and a very able historian. His book is out in great detail and clarity the life of Thomas Jefferson and his ability to achieve power for his new country and for himself. He lets the listener know that Jefferson is a very complicated personality who was dedicated to the freedom of the citizens of this new country and an unapologetic slaver owner.

Jefferson was an amazing

President Jefferson was an amazing, insightful leader as revealed in this book. Being human, he had a few flaws which were also revealed. "Thomas Jefferson: The Architect of Freedom in the Modern World" is not an easy listen, but it is so fascinating that it is well worth the effort to listen such a large tome.

Great listen

Excellent, balanced biography. This is no hagiography. Jefferson was a man, warts and all. A man of his times, yet remarkable. I think he'd be astounded by today's worshipping of the Constitution.

An Engaging listen about an Amazing man

Just began listening it following a visit to Jefferson’s home, Monticello, in Charlottesville, VA. Immediately grabs the listener with contemporary prose and fascinating family, “human” and factual tidbits. Includes wonderful enlightening photos as well. Will be a good, long winter listen. Eager to get back to it...
