Publisher's Summary

No more excuses. "Let the lawn get shaggy and the paint peel from the walls," best-selling novelist Walter Mosley advises. Anyone can write a novel now, and in this essential book of tips, practical advice, and wisdom, Walter Mosley promises that the writer-in-waiting can finish it in one year. Mosley tells how to:

  • Create a daily writing regimen to fit any writer's needs - and how to stick to it.
  • Determine the narrative voice that's right for every writer's style.
  • Get past those first challenging sentences and into the heart of a story.

Intended as both inspiration and instruction, This Year You Write Your Novel provides the tools to turn out a first draft painlessly and then revise it into something finer.

Fantastically Short and to the Point

I was looking for a book to recommend to someone who wants to write, but is not a big reader and eschews fluff of any kind in instructional material. This is the book for him. It gives great advice and covers the basics of what is necessary to write a book in a year. The narrator is excellent and adds another dimension to the writing. I heartily recommend this to you if you have similar characteristics as my new writer friend.

Just what I need to provide motivation

I enjoy Walter Mosley's books and appreciate that he would put something together for us.
This outlines the obvious hidden gems that it takes to write a book, like write every day. And when you finished the book fix all the mistakes. Then get someone else to fix all the mistakes. Obvious stuff, true, but people do kid themselves. Then get someone to read and get feedback do this and repeat.
The last part is to get an agent and how to get an agent and be persistent about it.. If you have been trying to publish a book this is really good stuff.

Practical Advice

This book does exactly what it promises to do: to encourage and instruct one to write their first novel. If you’re looking for an erudite tome with deep literary ponderings this is not it. On the other hand, if you are serious about writing your first novel and want practical advice from someone who has done it twenty seven times, this is the book. It is short, to the point and filled with little gems that will save you a lot of trouble and make your writing much more effective.

shorter than i expected

it had some good information, but not as much as I thought. i wasn't a book, it was more the length of a essay.
