Story
The first story Selma Blair Beitner ever heard about herself is that she was a mean, mean baby. With her mouth pulled in a perpetual snarl and a head so furry it had to be rubbed to make way for her forehead, Selma spent years living up to her terrible reputation: biting her sisters, lying spontaneously, getting drunk from Passover wine at the age of seven, and behaving dramatically so that she would be the center of attention. In a memoir that is as wildly funny as it is emotionally shattering, Blair tells the captivating story of growing up and finding her truth.

She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income.

Reese’s Southern heritage informs her whole life, and she loves sharing the joys of Southern living with practically everyone she meets. She takes the South wherever she goes with bluegrass, big holiday parties, and plenty of Dorothea’s fried chicken.

Publisher's summary
The New York Times bestseller
A memoir by the beloved comedic actress known for her roles on Freaks and Geeks, Dawson's Creek, and Cougartown who has become 'the breakout star on Instagram stories...imagine I Love Lucy mixed with a modern lifestyle guru' (New Yorker).
Busy Philipps's autobiographical book offers the same unfiltered and candid storytelling that her Instagram followers have come to know and love, from growing up in Scottsdale, Arizona and her painful and painfully funny teen years, to her life as a working actress, mother, and famous best friend.
Busy is the rare entertainer whose impressive arsenal of talents as an actress is equally matched by her storytelling ability, sense of humor, and sharp observations about life, love, and motherhood. Her conversational writing reminds us what we love about her on screens large and small. From film to television to Instagram, Busy delightfully showcases her wry humor and her willingness to bare it all.
'I've been waiting my whole life to write this book. I'm just so grateful someone asked. Otherwise, what was the point of any of it??'

Was skeptical but pleasantly surprised
I think Busy is amazing but waited to read her memoir due to seeing some bad reviews and underestimating her writing talent. It turns out that I’m not the first to have made that mistake and I’m so happy I was so wrong! Her memoir was addictive, beautifully written, funny, heartbreaking and always intriguing. She really knows how to tell a good anecdote and her honestly and strong, bad-ass spirit really comes through in full force. I’m absolutely in awe of her fighting nature and found myself crying along with her as she shared really brutally intimate moments of her life. I’m sure she won’t read this but I hope this review gets others to at least read it too. Thank you for sharing bits of your life with us, it helped me from within a deep depression and that is fucking priceless. x

I really wanted to love this but....
I enjoyed some of the stories especially from the author's teen years and thought the narration was great. I did however struggle to finish some parts: I felt the author lacked awareness at times and didn't address the privileges she had in life ( for example the 'sparkly people' explanation for why she was given certain opportunities and not the fact she grew up gorgeous, white and Middle class). I also felt parts of her story ( her celebrity years onwards) came off as tone deaf and shallow - I accept this was pre pandemic talking and a lot has gone on since - but complaining about certain celebrity spats sounded disjointed compared to heartfelt moments. Honestly, I think I had hoped this would be inspiring and I think she could have said more about important issues than she did. I do think the author was really brave to share some of the personal memories she had which is why I rated as I did.

Finally took the plunge!
I have had this book in my wishlist for a while ... like a year or more. I was hesitant as I didn't know too much about her, I finally bought it and no regrets!
An interesting insight to an actress I haven't known too much about. And the way she delivers it is 10/10! Well worth a listen.

Story
Lauren Weedman is not okay. She's living what should be the good life in sunny Los Angeles. After a gig as a correspondent with The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, she scored parts in blockbuster movies, which led to memorable recurring roles on HBO's Hung and Looking. She had a loving husband and an adorable baby boy. In these comedic essays, she turns a piercingly observant, darkly funny lens on the ways her life is actually not okay.

Story
I'm the One That I Want, based on her show of the same name, is filled with dead-on insights about the experience of being a woman with attitude, of flowing with the highs and lows of life, and of creating one's own identity and acceptance. It is every bit as hilarious, shocking, and irreverent as she is.

Part memoir, part comedy routine, part advice manual, Challenge Accepted! is Celeste at her best, revealing her secrets to love, friendship, family, and marriage (oh hai, #hothusband), and how to deal with life’s many challenges - why she checks the bath for sharks, how Nutella quite literally shaped who she is as a woman, and why being famous on Instagram is like being rich in Monopoly. It’s real, like totally, really real.
