Publisher's Summary

In this powerful new novel, William W. Johnstone and J. A. Johnstone chronicle Smoke Jensen's early years, long before he became a legend.

Kirby - later Smoke - Jensen has just earned his first paying job as a deputy US marshal for the Colorado Territory and is sent to the lawless town of Las Animas. There he finds a sheriff too cowardly to face the outlaw leader Cole Dawson, whose six-gun has left a lot of good men dead.

Young Smoke feels no such fear. He takes Dawson down fast. Then the real fight begins. It turns out Dawson is only a cog in a crooked plot hatched by someone hiding behind the law. For a young deputy marshal, going up against the powerful and corrupt is almost certainly a fool's mission, but doing nothing is not a choice. When Smoke strikes, he's in all the bloody way, and what follows will become the stuff of legend.

Braving bullets, blood, and treachery to face down the most dangerous outlaw in Colorado Territory, Smoke will earn a reputation for justice and the rule of law in a wild, violent frontier.

Not that much new

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

No, almost a complete copy of "Smoke Jensen, the Beginning"

What could William W. Johnstone and J. A. Johnstone have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Made it into one book.

Which character – as performed by Jack Garrett – was your favorite?

I like Jack Garrett, they were all good

Was This Violent Land worth the listening time?

Not really as stated above and below

Any additional comments?

I buy series and try to listen to them in order. The last few chapters of this book should have been added to the end of "Smoke Jensen, the Beginning". The only real difference between these two books is the beginning and end and about one year in release dates. The middle of the books are almost exactly the same. Waste of money or credits for these book.

The rest of the story

This book helped the reader fill in the story that was started by Smoke Jenson the Begining. It had many many many gunfights some were implausible (18 killed at one time) but that is why I read fiction and the younger generation have video game heroes. I liked the relationship theme of Father Son & Sister and the dramatic ending.

I hope this series continues....

The Johnstone's have written a great second book in the Stone Jensen series, I hope it will not be the last. I highly recommend this book and series to fans of "Old West" novels.

Good Story

Good story but very drawn out. Incorrect pistols being used for time period. Writer should check his firearms history better, much better!

Some parts repeat verbatim

I’ve enjoyed several of the Jensen stories and this two book series was no exception. I was surprised, however, when a few parts of this second book repeat verbatim the dialog or scene descriptions from earlier in the same book. Not the quality of writing and editing I have come to expect from these authors.
