Review by Climate.Careers

As the Founder of Climate.Careers, I feel that this book is an absolutely critical read for anyone who's seeking a high-level understanding of the extreme severity of the climate crisis, and a holistic overview of what we should be doing to address climate change and reverse global warming. I very much appreciate the variety of perspectives shared. It's important that readers understand that climate change is not just one thing, that it isn't just about carbon dioxide or methane, but in fact a whole host of other issues relating to economic systems, capitalism, social justice, and political will. For any of you out there reading this: If you are interested in finding opportunities to align your careers with solving the climate crisis, I highly recommend checking out www.climate.careers. Lacking in science, preaches to the choir.

The book contains a lot of emotional language, and is superficial when it comes to actual climate science. The IPCC is only mentioned 4 or 5 times, and it doesn't go into much detail. However it does give you an insight into the self-oppressed mindset that Extinction Rebellion activists wish to embrace. The attempt appears intended to grow their base of supporters through intersectionality. Expect to read about oppression by 'the 1%', capitalism, sexism, etc. It is worth mentioning that it gives you an understanding of how their protest tactics work, why they intend to get arrested, and how they attempt to respond positively when people are affected by their disruption tactics. It also touches a little bit on how they gained earned media through their boat and protesting at Greenpeace HQ. Overall, it's good if you want an insight into the movement, but it's best to remain objective as you listen. To the choir this book is intended for, I'm sure they'd give it 5 stars.

One of the most important books of our time

Well argued, presented in a reasoned, intelligent way to ensure the message gets through. Everyone should read this and act: a blueprint for peaceful, friendly, non violent, positive, important disruption. If we do nothing, all we hold dear, all these objects and things will be meaningless because we won’t exist.

All for XR but this is not a Handbook.

Well narrated. I learned alot. There are somethings I will do to make change here and have already. I wanted more though as a 'handbook' should be a guide. It became too bogged down in the ideology at times.

Religious propaganda but very entertaining

If you want to understand the world view of those Extinction Rebellion (XR) activists who brought London to a standstill then this is the book. It's their manifesto. No attempt is made to justify the idea of man-made global warming or the apocalyptic predictions of future climate catastrophe - this book is about what the XR people plan to do to stop these events. It get's to the point which is praiseworthy! Each chapter has a different writer, this makes the book varied and ensures that if one chapter is boring you will not have to wait long for things to become interesting again. The book is also short, brevity is a great feature. The core of the argument seems to be applying post-modern anti-Europeanism to the environment. "You know those horrible Europeans who gave us capitalism and empire? Well, let's talk about the environment and how the 1st world is committing ecocide!". It was very noticeable that the multiple authors had a strong fetish for tribal (indigenous) cultures and a dislike of Europeans. I was cringing and laughing throughout. This really is a work of the bourgeois, 30-year-long-gap-year, PhD types who have no problems and so create them. It is the New Testament for the born again vegan. It is the new Communist Manifesto for the sandal-wearing, tambourine-tapping, lentil-eating crusty hippie! Brief, direct, entertaining. Full marks!

Such an enlightening read

I rarely feel like I am a different person due to a book but coming out the other side of listening to this I feel I have been on a journey that has changed me. It is an uncomfortable, scary journey but I was surprised how inspiring it is too. I actually feel excited now by how we can move forwards together to build a future where we are so much happier than before.

Tired of the political status quo? Read, then act

The Climate Emergency. Is there a new way of thinking to make change happen in our lifetime? ER think they have an answer. Some ideas are brilliant but others alienate. This only works it you're middle to upper class and white. But that said, if that's where you are in life, then you're exactly the person that needs to change! You have a choice, most of the population does not.
