Publisher's summary

Sneaking out of the palace wasn’t one of Aniri’s best ideas.

But she’s the third daughter of the Queen of Dharia - zero responsibilities and zero royal duties. She’s just the backup daughter, in case her older sisters’ arranged marriages - to take the crown or broker an alliance - don’t quite work out. But once Aniri reaches her 18th birthday, she’ll be truly free...and then she can marry the charming fencing instructor she meets for fevered kisses in the forest.

But then the impossible happens - a marriage proposal. From a barbarian prince in the north, no less. And if Aniri refuses, the threat of their new flying weapon might bring war.

So she agrees to the young prince’s proposal, but only as a subterfuge to spy on him, find the weapon, and hopefully avoid both war and an arranged marriage to a man she doesn’t love. But once she arrives in the sweeping mountains of the north, she discovers the prince has his own secrets...and saving her country may end up breaking her heart.

This Bollywood-style royal romance takes you to an alternate East Indian world filled with skyships, saber duels, and lots of royal intrigue.

Third Daughter is the first book in the Royals of Dharia trilogy.

Good read

My first read from author Susan Kaye Quinn. A rollicking steam-punk adventure set in exotic India. I got this book back in June of 2016 and never got around to reading it until I was given an Audible copy of this book. I was attracted to get the Kindle edition initially by the cover image & the premise of the book! Well-written with shallow but well-developed main characters, still, an enjoyable read, the last 15% a real page-turner. I'm voluntarily reviewing this book!(RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

Third Daughter

I had the pleasure of being introduced to Susan Kaye Quinn's books by listening to the audio version of her Third Daughter. This begins her The Royals of Dharia series. I thought it was pretty good. Since I was not used to the authors writing style, I did have a hard time as to what was going on at first. Around the 25% mark, I caught on and was hooked. What a fun read!

I am giving First Daughter four stars. I look forward to the next installment of the The Royals of Dharia series.

I received the audio version of this book from the author, but was not required to write a review. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

A Thrilling Story!

This is the first audio book I’ve listened to by this author and narrator. I have read other books by this author and enjoyed them which is why I was interested in Third Daughter.

This book kept me on my toes and thoroughly enthralled. I spent half my day at work today listening while pushing papers!

At first I struggled to connect with the narration. I’m not a frequent audio book listener and the narrators cadence took some getting used to. However after a few chapters her voice brought the characters to life for me! I could vividly see the imagery of the story. I fell in love with the characters, seeing their struggles and how they grew and developed.

The author does a fantastic job and I truly enjoyed this narration.

Wowza

This is the first I’ve read in the series and it had me staying up late and listening in the car every chance I got. At first I was thinking it was just going to be the story of a spoiled rich princess, secretly in love with someone far below her station, but it was soooo much more. There was adventure, unexpected twists and it just kept me wanting to know more. Very well written and the narration is wonderfully done as well.

Engaging and totally different for me.

Third Daughter is my first exposure to the steam punk or Bollywood story setting. I was immediately caught up into the story and loved all the twists.
The main characters were very young for the adventures and responsibilities they experienced but for entertainment purposes I was able to forget about that thru most of the story.
The main character made many incorrect assumptions that were just signs of immaturity and inexperience but I like that she was quick to acknowledge those mistakes and move forward.
The story was driven by Aniri's emotional reaction to quickly changing events but I never felt like I was getting dragged down into melodrama. I really enjoyed the ever changing landscape and the world building was very very good!
The only problem I had with this book was the names. As I said, this is my first exposure to Bollywood and the character names and places sounded so foreign to me that I had difficulty keeping straight who was who and where was where. I remember having the same problem with the Wizarding World back in the day :)

If you're looking for a book that is adventurous, innocently romantic and will take you to a place that's out of this world, I think you'll really enjoy this first book in The Royals of Dharia series.
I'm happy to see that all 3 books in the series are available and I've already purchased book 2 & 3.

fun story with so many twists!

Such a fun story with so many twists! The narrator is perfect for the story. The Royals of Dharia is a little outside my normal reading preference, but I really enjoyed it. The world building & character development is top notch. I'll be continuing the series!
