Publisher's summary

The grieving process: Ty Alexander of Gorgeous in Grey is one of the top bloggers today. She has a tremendous personal connection with her listeners. This is never more apparent than when she speaks about her mother. The pain of loss is universal. Yet, we all grieve differently.

For Alexander, the grieving process is one that she lives with day-to-day. Learning from her pain, Alexander connects with her listeners on a deeply emotional level in her debut audiobook Things I Wish I Knew before My Mom Died: Coping with Loss Every Day. From grief counseling to sharing insightful true stories, Alexander offers comfort, reassurance, and hope in the face of sorrow.

Coping with loss: In her early 20s reality smacked Ty in the face. She was ill-equipped to deal with the emotional and intellectual rollercoaster of dealing with her mom's illness. Through her own trial and error, she found a way to be a caregiver, patient advocate, researcher, and a grieving daughter. She wrote Things I Wish I Knew before My Mom Died: Coping with Loss Every Day to help others find the "best" way to cope and move on; however, one personally decides what that means.

Mourning and remembrance: In the chapters of this soul-touching audiobook, mourners will find meaning and wisdom in grieving and the love that will always remain. Each chapter is a study and lesson in coping with loss:

  • Chapter 1: We've been duped, everyone dies!
  • Chapter 2: When fragmented families grieve
  • Chapter 3: The art of losing
  • Chapter 4: The how of grieving
  • Chapter 5: How to be obsessively grateful
  • Chapter 6: Things every mother should tell her daughter
  • Chapter 7: Dear Mommy

A touching peek into a very personal experience.

The narrator was very adept at changing her tones to match the emotion in the passages.

A beautiful memoir of loss and hope

I got this book because I am caring for my aging mother, and I just lost my 19 year old cat to chronic renal failure, after a 4 1/2 year struggle to keep him with me. The discussion of how the acceptance of the impending death of a loved one frees us to enjoy and appreciate our last days together really resonated with me. Spending time with a dying relative, friend, partner, or pet is potentially beautiful, when we are able to look death in the eye. I love how the author addressed insensitive statements often made in times of loss, and why they don’t help. She also gives many helpful suggestions, including how to grow stronger through our grief, rather than letting it take us down. This honors the wishes of our loved ones, for us to thrive. I loved the touching representation of the mother/child relationship, and how we can come to a point of understanding and forgiveness of a parent. This helped me with the anxiety of wondering how long I will have my mother, sparked by the loss of the cat we both loved. I learned that love doesn’t have to end, if we keep it alive in our spirit. Both critical and reverent, funny and sad, this powerful book is anything but cliche. I highly recommend it for anyone who has suffered the loss of a loved one, or wondering what that will look and feel like, in the future.

Intimate and Empathetic

I love the way Ty shared intimate memories of her mother. I was also surprised to find that someone else in “the club” writes to their mama. I start all my journal entries with “Hey mom”. It makes me feel like she’s still here and present in my life. I’m a busy-work runner too so hearing from the same perspective helps. Thanks Ty. Your mom sounds like she was truly one of a kind💖

Intriguing

I lost my mom a year ago, and listening to the author speak with real pain in her voice but truths we all need to hear and be ok with during grief gave me pause, to see and recognize i’m allowed to feel this way. Because these are my feelings alone. but we’re all in this grief club together.
