Publisher's summary

M. J. Kuhn returns to the gritty world of heists, magic, and deception in this high-stakes fantasy follow-up to internationally bestselling Among Thieves perfect for fans of Leigh Bardugo and V.E. Schwab.

Ryia Cautella, a.k.a. the Butcher of Carrowwick, and her motley crew have succeeded in the ultimate heist...with the most dire possible consequences. A terrifyingly powerful tool has fallen into the hands of Callum Clem, the criminal leader of the Saints, who was already one of the most dangerous men alive. With the newfound ability to force magic-wielding Adepts to his will, he is unstoppable.

With their group scattered throughout the five kingdoms of Thamorr—and not all on the same side of the fight—things seem hopeless. But can Ryia get the gang back together for one last job? Or will chess-worthy power plays and shifting loyalties change Thamorr as they know it?

New favorite!

The first book was great but the second was even better. This series has a unique magical system unlike any other fantasy book I’ve read. I liked all the main characters and enjoyed learning about each of them through their own point of view. I’m really looking forward to the next book!

Stuck the landing!

A compelling and fitting end to the story that started in Among Thieves. The book was engaging throughout but the climax in particular was really well done, weaving the plot and several character arcs to satisfying conclusions. The narrator is a great fit for the material too, with an almost conspiratorial air. Overall a great read, highly recommend the duology.

Fast moving, twisty finale- at times unbelievable

“I’ve got some new tricks.”
This book picks right up where book 1 left off and then doubles down on everything: more action, more powerful magic, more sides, and more shifting alliances. This remained firmly in YA territory, with no sex, a handful of F bombs, and a very mild romance, allowing for the fantasy to remain the central story.

“For such a big world, it feels awfully f ng small lately.”
It’s nice that the author was self aware enough to acknowledge the stretches. Given that the battle for power expands to multiple different lands, it’s amazing how the members of the original heist crew manage to keep running into each other. Not to mention a certain someone who not once, but twice manages to land in a prison cell conveniently right next to important people.

“When do our jobs ever go as planned?”
But this isn’t one of those series where it takes 45 hours just to introduce the characters. The shorter length occasionally feels like fantasy speed dating, however it also means we get right to the good stuff.
In this case, the best stuff is a bunch of flawed rogues becoming unlikely heroes in a world of unique blood magic. I appreciated that not everyone gets to the end with an HEA and wouldn’t mind at all if
an adventure began anew in a book 3.
