Editorial reviews

Editors Select, September 2017

Even though the entire premise of Silvera’s new YA novel is about impending death, this poignant tale of two teen boys knowingly going about their last day alive is all about the promise of life. As the socially stunted yet giant-hearted Mateo meets and gets to know rough-around-the-edges yet thoughtful Rufus, they explore what it means to be alive and who constitutes family. Michael Crouch, Robbie Daymond, and Bahni Turpin embody these and more characters in nuanced ways that tease out the many emotions of preparing for death (from regret to acceptance and growth) and embracing the most important thing about life: love. —Abby, Audible Editor

On September 5, a little after midnight, Death-Cast calls Mateo Torrez and Rufus Emeterio to give them some bad news: They’re going to die today.

Mateo and Rufus are total strangers, but, for different reasons, they’re both looking to make a new friend on their End Day. The good news: There’s an app for that. It’s called the Last Friend, and through it, Rufus and Mateo are about to meet up for one last great adventure—to live a lifetime in a single day.

In the tradition of Before I Fall and If I Stay, They Both Die at the End is a tour de force from acclaimed author Adam Silvera, whose debut, More Happy Than Not, the New York Times called “profound.”

cute but tragic

unfortunately I felt like Matheo got a lot more love than Rufus, despite them both being equally as important to the story. But other than that it was an easy and enjoyable read. The performance was fantastic

Interesting concepts all around

Death casts remind us all about the preciousness of life in a day where we are all distracted.
The love that is portrayed in this book is a story of the true unfolding of how love truly is. Love sees no boundaries, we should all listen and be open to this authors message about love and seeing the truth of people.

A sad reawakening of our journey towards death

The story of dying has never been made more interesting & enlightening. This is a powerful story of living on, yet dying away. It holds you onwards with its predictable ending, of all men's journey towards the clutching chilled grasp of death. Brillant piece!

I'm crying

This was heartbreaking. I'm crying. Too emotional. Too beautiful. @rufusonpluto is an actual account. I won't ever be the same after this.

I'm not crying! You're crying!

An incredible story that has real heart. Found myself tearing up numerous times and genuinely felt liked I'd lost two close friends by the time the credits started.

Nearly Threw My Phone

Such a good story and so well narrated that I momentarily forgot what I was warned in the title and nearly smashed my phone because I was so devastated when it happened. Loved getting to know these characters and I am sooooo glad I listened to this one. Worth the credit/cash. And now I have to read the rest of the author's works!

couldn't stop listening!!

this book was amazing. I've read several in my lifetime and usually say at the end of good books that some could be movies. but this one SHOULD be a movie! this was a masterpiece!! even though the title of the book says they both die at the end it isn't enough to prepare you for what happens! if you're on the fence about getting this lemme push you off it and tell you that this is a MUST READ/LISTEN TO BOOK THAT YOU WILL NOT REGRET!!!!!!!
