Story
Love was the furthest thing from Patricia Abbott's mind when she met Tony Wainwright. Though he was heir to the Wainwright fortune and the magnificent family mansion known as the Cloisters, the rumors of his private revels hinted at a dark and sinister decadence. And there was something else - a woman Tony never spoke about, hidden away in the shadows... a woman who was his wife. But it was already too late. As Tony drew her into a dangerous liaison, Patricia became enmeshed in an inescapable web of lies, secrets, and cold-blooded murder.

Story
Tilling Green was a charming little village nestling in the Ledshire countryside. Not at all the sort of place you would expect to find an anonymous letter writer. And when one of the recipients, a young woman, was found drowned in the lake belonging to the Manor House, Miss Silver was persuaded to go and investigate. Valentine Grey was marrying one Gilbert Earle, but on the night of Valentine's pre-wedding party Jason Leigh, Valentine's former love, returned after months without a word.

Miss Silver joins a friend from Scotland Yard to investigate a suspicious suicide. Frank Abbott’s vacations never last very long, and his trip to Field End is no exception. He has hardly enjoyed a moment of Jonathan Field’s hospitality before tragedy strikes. A niece ventures into old Jonathan’s study at night to ask him a question, and finds him stone cold with a revolver by his hand. An obvious suicide, it seems, but Inspector Abbott is not so sure.

Publisher's Summary
In a nearly empty house, a young woman finds herself alone with a killer.
As far as Carol Spencer is concerned, the war has spoiled everything. She and Don had been engaged for years and were on the verge of marriage when he was shot down in the South Pacific, leaving Carol on the verge of spinsterhood at 24. She wants to take some kind of job in the war effort, but her invalid mother demands that Carol accompany her to the family’s summer home in Maine. But when they arrive at the faded mansion, they find it completely locked up. The servants are gone, the lights are dark - and there is a body in the closet.
There is a killer on the grounds of the abandoned Spencer estate, and the police believe it is Carol. As war rages across the seas, Carol Spencer fights a private battle of her own - to prove her own innocence, and to save her mother’s life.

If you knew Mary like I know Mary
What did you like best about The Yellow Room? What did you like least?
I am a willing participant in just about anything written by Mrs. Rinehart. The Maine setting of this one was a particular draw
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Yellow Room?
The arrival of Carol's entourage at the surprisingly empty summer home
What didn’t you like about Liza Ross’s performance?
Oh, Ms Ross, Ms Ross--these people are in MAINE, the Northeastiest of the Northeastern states. Why then, dear, do you assign to each and every one of them the sounds of the Myid Wyest??! " Cyarol fyelt gryatefyul to the pyoint of tyears, ..." Ugh I was so put off by this that I could not finish. I'll just hunt up and read the book.
No objection to these accents in their proper place, however.

Greatly enjoyed
As a big fan of classic crime author Ethel Lina White, I've been looking for many years for an author along a similar vein. Someone recommended Mary Roberts Rinehart to me and I'm so glad they did. I greatly enjoyed this book, great atomsphere from a isolated spooky house with a grizzly corpse in the closet. Lots of family drama ensues, and I definitely didn't the solution to the story coming. Definitely will be listening to more from the author.

Started well but ended in a confusing mess.
The narrator does well with nicely depicted characters and an interestingly twisted plot until the final few chapters where our hero has conversations and confessions with various key players which exclusively use pronouns. He is handed vital clues and documents which are not disclosed to the reader/listener and leave us feeling cheated as we try to work out whodunnit. The denouement is a complete mess, I'm still not entirely sure who killed whom!
