Publisher's summary

A little girl who quells demons. An aging dragonslayer. Can they stop the Yellow Dragon before it destroys an entire nation?

Pingzi Po is the only demon queller in the medieval Far East. So far, she has quelled exactly one demon: Benzel of the Wolf, a dragonslayer from the Northlands. Now, she must act as Benzel’s interpreter when he’s charged with slaying a dangerous yellow dragon seen only by an emperor.

But the emperor reveals the Yellow Dragon isn’t an animal - it’s an unidentified citizen in his province, who has threatened to murder the emperor.

Convinced that this unknown citizen is a demon that must be quelled, Pingzi races to unravel the mystery that will reveal the identity of the Yellow Dragon. Can she expose the Yellow Dragon before the emperor is killed and the entire Far East is put in danger?

If you like original stories, great characters, and plots that twist and turn, then you'll love Resa Nelson's fantasy mystery.

Middle-school - 5 Star / Adult - 4 Star

I am a bit torn on rating this book. The story was intriguing but the overall tone seemed to be more fitting for a middle-school audience. So for that audience I would give it 5-stars, but for adult audience I would give it 3.5-4 stars. Since there is noting in the description to indicate the intended audience, I am going with 4 stars.
The book gives many references to the Far East culture (at least in the time period of the book). I am not sure if it is accurate, but seemed to be which was interesting, although a number of references were repeated frequently in the story (such as the strict laws with harsh punishments).
There was no indication of what constituted a "demon" although that may be covered in a previous book. It appeared that anyone with evil intent was considered a demon.
Overall I enjoyed the plot and if the presentation was a bit less didactic I would give it a 5 Star rating. I would also recommend for reading to middle-school age children.

I received this audiobook as a free review copy and am giving my honest opinion.

A beautiful story

I loved this bittersweet story. A perceptive and courageous young girl navigates the dangerous laws of the Imperial Courts to uncover truths. Pingzi Po, who is 11 years old and the only Demon Queller in the Far East, is tasked with quelling the Yellow Dragon. Pingzi Po is a distant cousin of the Po Emperor, giving her status despite her gender and age. She exploits this to protect those she cares for as the lies are exposed. The descriptions of the medieval Far Eastern Courts and the restrictions placed on women and lesser classes is detailed and scary. The punishments harsh and inexorable. The story is well paced. I understand that there could have been no other outcome, but it left me in tears.

A tragedy of politics meeting people

This is a strong tale of espionage and subterfuge in a very oriental country. The main character, a little girl from a noble family, tracks down a conspiracy, reveals it and has to deal with the consequences.

Recommend

This is interesting book. Her family has shunned her because she has a dragon/demon. Even though she works for the empirer she can never live on the grounds with them. Very detailed and you are able to feel the emotions from the characters. I would recommend.

A truly great book. So many things to learn about a different culture. Good clues and twists as more than one mystery unfolds. Well narrated as well.

What a Great Story in an Eastern land

This story was completely unexpected but I was completely addicted before the halfway point. I loved all of the mysterious feeling that the author gives to the story. They set up a magical world with a great story to follow. The investigation leads down some very interesting paths and the main characters have to keep second-guessing everything and everyone. I just love how things work out. This subtle magical sense of the book is very welcome and I look forward to reading more from the author! I also loved her narration of the book!

A smart little Mistress

Pingzi Po is a very determined young woman. She did a great job with her cover story. All the conversations she had & eventually, she put the puzzle together. A very interesting story.

Interesting fantasy

The story of 11 year old Pingzi Po who is a demon quelled and has
Brought back only one demon Benzel of the wolf. It is a fantasy that takes place in the medieval Far East. It starts out with emperor Po
Asking her to go to to another province to find out about a yellow dragon. From there it goes on a journey with many twists and turns,
I think it helps Pingzi grow up a little. She has to find out who the yellow dragons and who made it. In the end Pingzi has to accept
Who and why of the yellow dragon.

interesting fantasy

it was a bit of a slow start and the chosen narrator was hard to listen to but the story is interesting and fun I think I'll read the sequels because the narrator made it hard to keep going. The voice wasn't expressive enough.
