Persuasive and Relatable

I’m always interested in reading about a person’s journey from faith to atheism because it often helps me relate to those who still believe. This is one of those accounts; but additionally, the author goes on a deeper dive to put religion on trial, so to speak. He makes the case for how science is far more true and accurate than any religious scripture. He also reminds us the mind is easily manipulated, indoctrinated, and brainwashed and so it cannot be underestimated.

The author shares some very personal stories about his life, family, and faith. This author’s honesty about his love life, multiple marriages, and journey from different positions of faith may be very relatable to many readers.

One part of the book I found most successful and persuasive was the author’s overview of the world’s major religions and their similarities and concerns. In my own progressive enlightenment I found this subject an important and profound source of doubt and questioning.

While the author admits he is not a scientist, he easily explains how different scientific tools such as DNA, evolution, the speed of light, Doppler, elemental dating, etc. make his case against the most essential and primary of religious claims: creationism and Adam & Eve. He goes on to persuade the reader that there are far more convincing theories including Big Bang to explain the origin of life and the universe. The author provided citations for these scientific claims in the Kindle and paperback versions but the audiobook lacks this feature. I suggest the Audible version be provided with a PDF link to fix this issue.

Before closing, I want to add one final note for the Audible version only: I have a personal preference for professional readers versus authors reading his/her/their own work. This is in no way a slight to the author. It’s just that I think professional readers do a better job at intonation, voice projection, and bring an element of acting and entertainment that is somewhat necessary in the audiobook format that authors often lack. Again, this is absolutely subjective on my part as someone who devours audiobooks 24/7.

I think Andrew James McQuinn makes the case for truth in “The World’s Biggest Lie” and would recommend this book to fellow humanists and atheists who enjoy reading de-conversion chronicles with bonus scientific conclusions that debunk scripture-based religious doctrine. I’d also recommend this book to anyone who questions or doubts God and religion and/or is truly open to logical, constructive criticism of faith and dogma.

Contradictory

This was one of worst things I’ve read ever. The author spends all this time belittling religious people’s intelligence and it’s only their low intelligence that allows them to believe in conspiracy theories and then offers his own conspiracy theory about Muslims taking over Canada and the world. He also goes hard over Russia controlling the US. These are concretely untrue and I found incredibly contradictory to his message. His overview of science was good but science lies too. It hasn’t explained everything right. We thought ether carried light a 150 years ago. There are things it hasn’t explained like what was before the Big Bang and where does dark energy come from. It doesn’t talk about quantum entanglement where all particles seem to have some knowledge of particles they are entangled with. Likely many particles were entangled pre-big bang. This is unexplained and unexpected and could lead to very interesting discoveries in the future. At the end of the day I found this to be dogma no better or worse than religious dogma. Just in a different form.
