Publisher's summary

On the eve of D-Day, a British secret agent with unique powers goes behind Nazi lines.

Michael Gallatin is a British spy with a peculiar talent: the ability to transform himself into a wolf. Although his work in North Africa helped the Allies win the continent in the early days of World War II, he quit the service when a German spy shot his lover in her bed. Now, three years later, the army asks him to end his retirement and parachute into occupied Paris. A mysterious German plan called the Iron Fist threatens the D-Day invasion, and the Nazi in charge is the spy who betrayed Michael’s lover. The werewolf goes to France for king and country, hoping for a chance at bloody vengeance.

Critic reviews

"Simon Prebble's elegant narration adds dignity to a potentially tawdry premise: a British spy in Nazi-occupied Europe during WWII who is secretly a werewolf. As it turns out, McCammon's storyline is surprisingly plausible, and Prebble persuasively voices the spy's tortured introspection about his identity as well as the horrors of the Nazi regime…. Prebble articulates a wide range of characters--from a beautiful French Resistance warrior to a sneering Nazi officer--with just enough color to distinguish them. Also notable are Prebble's voices for the spy's fellow werewolves and his perfect pacing as the spy is almost cornered." ( AudioFile)

Thoroughly Enjoyable!

The story is captivating, the narration is pleasant and smooth. The characters are loveable or hated. It has a bit of everything, horror, suspense, romance (sex), even a cliffhanger. A mellow book thanks to Mr. Prebble's narration! His read and tone of voice is as such that makes one want to "pay attention". The "horror" is subtle, believable and the bad guys getting their come-uppin's is delicious! Can't praise the book enough and I am an AVID bad book returner! This is a gem I will listen to several more times, it's that enjoyable!

The Wolfs Hour

A magnificent story of a werewolf from first conception to a storied career in wartime of WWll! I have never enjoyed anything as much as this book! The authors descriptive style is beyond compare! I have read nearly everything he has written to this point and thoroughly enjoyed all of them but I have never read anything from anyone more sweepingly epic than this! I was worn out by the finish with pure adrenaline. I WILL reread this in the future! BRAVO!!!!!

A very interesting ride.

This was a pretty exhilarating listen. The story was original and the narrator did a superb job.
My only critique was that the overly descriptive sex scenes came off a bit like a romance novel. I’m no prude, but they felt a bit dated and out of place.
A fantastic listen and on par with Swan Song.

Enjoyable story with characters I liked or hated

I read a lot of books from this genre - my list looks more like I'm a 15-year old guy instead of a 64-year old woman! I've read several of McCammon's books and Wolf's Hour is a great addition to my library. I would have enjoyed a bit more wolffish time with the main character, but getting to know him in both his human and wolf persona was interesting. And who doesn't hate Nazi's?

Excellent Narrator!

Simon Prebble brings the characters alive. I plan to read the next book from Mr.McCammon and hope Mr. Prebble is still the narrator.

A favorite

One off my favorite books. I had read it twice previously, the last time long enough ago to thoroughly enjoy this audio book. Mr. Prebble did a great job.

2 books in one

This novel tells two stories: the WWII spy hunting Nazis, and the origin story of the wolf man. Both are action packed and full of tension and it's all beautifully written. I almost passed because the premise sounded corny, but I'm glad I didn't. McCammon is a master!

If you're gonna be stupid, you better be tough!

Very exciting story and great settings. The main character makes some pretty stupid mistakes and pays dearly for them. Seems kind of like a prototype of the James Bond character, just with a lot more beatings and injuries. I'm not really fond of McCammon's exploration of main characters with head injuries; that really turned me off in his Matthew Corbitt series too. It is a good book, overall.

Great to revisit this book

I read this book back in high school and it has remained one of my favorite werewolf titles of all time. This story is full of suspense and action and I love how the author wrote Micheal's back story. The narrative was excellent in thus audiobook and drew me into the story. This is a title I will listen to again!
