Publisher's Summary

An incompetent wizard turned my girlfriend into a frog, and that’s just the beginning.

The name’s Jack, and I hunt monsters for a living. I’ve been doing this for a while, but my associate is new. Dormuris is an elf I rescued from a troll, and he's a wizard. Sort of. He’s not the best with magic, and he accidentally turned my girlfriend into a frog.

In order to reverse the spell, we have to seek out a real wizard. The guy who offers to help is an oddball, but so long as he can turn my girlfriend back into a human, I can deal with it. He wants a golden egg and a unicorn. Say what now?

I thought my life as a monster hunter was chaos, but I was about to see just how crazy things could get.

Minotaurs, goblins, a singing sword...yeah, you read that right.

If we don’t get the items the wizard needs quickly enough, my girlfriend will end up being a frog permanently. And that wouldn’t be good for anyone, especially me.

Great fun. I wish it was longer

The Wizard and The Frog is a great, rollicking adventure of a quick witted warrior and his incompetent wizard companion. After saving the wizards life, the warrior Jack is stuck with him. Unfortunately the wizard isn't so much a wizard and more a dropout from wizard college - expelled due to continually screwing up spells and causing major damage.

For a short book there is a whole lot of well built characters. Even the ones that are only there for a short while feel realistic. The story is very quick paced, cramming a lot of things into a short time. Possibly too much, considering it includes the setup, two quests and a conclusion. The humour is good, the action engaging. There is enough standard 'D&D' type tropes and short hand in there that you don't have to have the world explained in detail, but it is varied enough that it doesn't feel like a straight knock off. I would love to have spent more time with these characters and wish the story was longer or there was more stories in a series.

Narration by Jarret Lemaster is great, although not perfect. He does wonderful characters, really bringing everyone - even the small bit parts - to life. Engaging, interesting, energetic. There are times I didn't think he quite landed the comedic timing, but generally he gets it right. certainly a narrator I will be keeping my eye out for again.

There is one small piece of acoustic music late in the story, but it works with the story, rather than being background music, so I didnt have an issue with it.

The Wizard and the Frog

I found this story very amusing and enjoyed listening to the "mis"adventures of Jack and "D". I hope the author continues this series. Overall, I thought the narrator did a wonderful job. I received this audio book for free through Audiobook Boom for my unbiased review.

Light and witty!

An interesting and witty short story, which appears to be volume one of a series. I’m not sure what else can be salvaged from the story for a second book. Perhaps the short story aspect is sufficient. There are several references to the Jack and the Beanstalk fable, which I thought interesting but saw no further purpose. The characters are intriguing, especially Jack’s rescued sidekick. Jack’s girlfriend, not so much. The tale of the princess and the frog this is not

This is not the tale of the princess and the frog. This is the tale of the wizard and the frog. The tale of an incompetent wizard who turns a monster hunters girlfriend into a frog while mistakenly defending him as part of a life debt. They just now complete the quest of a master wizard to obtain the golden egg from the lair of the Minotaurs and one of the last female unicorns from the forests all while dodging evil and those whom the hunter owes a debt, while toting around the girlfriend turned frog. Why these particular items? Of what significance to the spell do they serve? Wait until you find out. Great short tale that will engage and entertain. Well written and well narrated. Tell vs. Show

While I don't mind there being some telling, none of the story is showing and even after the entire thing I have no idea what the main character looks like or really an idea of what most things looked like. That said, the story itself was intriguing and the characters were decently fleshed out, its just the way that the story was told that left something to be desired.

A fun jaunt into a familiar world

Anybody with some D&D experience will be at home here.
A capable monster hunter happens to save a wizard's life, who then pledges a life debt. The only problem is, the wizard is mostly incompetent. A short quest is then embarked upon to rectify a miscast spell. Hijinks ensue.
The humor is good, and the narrator does a great job of selling it. The singing was actually a highlight for me.
I definitely would listen to more of this duo in future audio books.

Very Funny Short Fantasy Story

I found this book quite enjoyable. It follows the adventures of Jack a wise cracking but good hearted Monster Hunter and his new companion a Wizard Dormuris who doesn't quite have control of his magical talent. They go on an adventure to undo one of Dormuris spells that went quite awry.

They go on a madcap adventure, with some great action, good humor and interesting characters along the way. The Narration by Jarret Lemaster was very good, I had never heard of him before as a narrator but he did a fantastic job even when he had to sing. He has a great accent and I think it only added to the performance for me.

This book is quite enjoyable but very short, I don't know if I would use a credit on it because of it's length but it is well worth a purchase and a listen.

What a fun listen!

I enjoyed this listen from beginning to end. It was a great fantasy with a warrior monster hunter, a not-quite-ready-for-primetime wizard, and the warrior's girlfriend, now frog. It was fun!

The narration was excellent!!! Fantasy books are special and they need a special narrator. That is very evident with this quick but fun listen.

Completely Charming Adventure

I received this book for free. I am voluntarily leaving this review and all opinions expressed herein are my lwn.

I absolutely enjoyed this tale of Jack, who is a monster hunter, his girlfriend and an elf, who is a horrible wizard. Here, Jack saves the elf after defeating a troll and the elf proposes a life debt, which Jack accepts. Jack then travels home to his girlfriend, whom he lost in the forest. Unfortunately, the elf casts a spell which turns his girlfriend into a frog and cannot reverse it. They then travel to the wizard academy - where the elf had been thrown out due to being a horrible wizard - to find a wizard who might help with the frog situation. They are given a list of items they must retrieve in order for such a spell to work and the quest begins.

This is completely charming and family friendly. The characters are fun, funny and the situations they end up in result in one misstep after another but you can't help but root for them to succeed. It's a quick read and I was enjoying so much that I was sorry to have it end. Hopefully the author is planning more adventures for these characters. This story has made me a fan!

The narrator was a perfect match for this story - he did character voices and even sang a bit. He was a perfect compliment to this joyful tale! I will be looking for more of his narrations!

Fun fantasy if not a little too short

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

This has all the familiar elements of nice fantasy book. It’s quite a light hearted fun story which I really enjoyed. The narrator did a good job making the story flow and gave a good performance. My only grip is there wasn't much complexity in the story and development in the characters but there is only so much you can fit in just over 2 hours. I might have enjoyed it more if there was a second half, maybe involving the hints of a vampire hunt. If this is a taster for what Richard Fierce can do I would be tempted in another book which had a bit more meat to it. I will keep an eye out for anymore adventures with Jack and Dormuris.
