Milly Theale is a young, beautiful, and fabulously wealthy American. When she arrives in London and meets the equally beautiful but impoverished Kate Croy, they form an intimate friendship. But nothing is as it seems; materialism, romance, self-delusion, and ultimately fatal illness, insidiously contaminate the glamorous social whirl.Download the accompanying reference guide.©1997 NAXOS AudioBooks Ltd. Reseñas editoriales

William Hope uses his voice well to give varied voices to men and women, both British and American and of various ages, in this novel of transatlantic complications between an ailing American heiress and the passionate British couple driven to use her. Hope's Brits, especially Mrs. Lowder, tend to caricature. Still, he has command of James's complex sentences, and his pacing, accenting, and emphasis often make them clearer to hear than they are to read, an achievement that is considerable.

I love this story - but I have a very difficult time following James' story with this narrator.

Wrong Narrator

There are comments here from people who say they had a hard time following the narrative. Yeah no kidding!! It's gibberish! The poor thing has been abridged to within an inch of its life!

This title has been DRAMATICALLY abridged, but the only way you can learn that from the website is if you look at the run time and you already know it should be much, much longer than that. No worries, you can return it, right? NO YOU CANNOT, not if you got tricked into buying it during a sale with money (since it isn't that expensive) instead of a full credit, like I did. It's a straightforward rip off.

And I feel bad for those people who bought this thinking they would try some Henry James. This is not Henry James. It's little pieces of him, sold by dishonest people as the real thing. Audible has done a great and terrible disservice here.

(rhymes with) Tiss poor abridgement
