Publisher's Summary

This acclaimed story of World War II is rich in suspense, characterization, plot, and spiritual truth. Every element of occupied Holland is united in a story of courage and hope: a hidden Jewish child, an underdiver, a downed RAF pilot, an imaginative, daring underground hero, and the small things of family life which surprisingly carry on in the midst of oppression. The Verhagen family, who live in the old windmill called the Winged Watchman, are a memorable set of individuals whose lives powerfully demonstrate the resilience of those who suffer but do not lose faith.

Thoughtful story w/ excellent narration

After having lived in the Netherlands for several years, I was delighted to enjoy this authentic book with my children. A thoughtful, moving story that will cause you to pause and think and rejoice without sappy manipulation so common in contemporary children's literature. Beautiful themes of compassion, duty, forgiveness. Excellently presented. First rate all around.

A Great Family Book

I listened to this with my 5, 7, 9, and 11 year old children. The 5 and 7 year olds tuned out and played for parts but the 9 and 11 year old and myself were enthralled! An excellent book for picturing the events of WWII and the family.

great story about a lesser known area of WWII.

great way to introduce kids to the tragedies and hardships of WWII. I believe it's best for ages 9 and up, although my 7 yo listened too. the children in the story acted courageously and with faith. great listen for the whole family.

The love, courage y honor of a WWII Dutch family.

Honestly portrays the danger and tragedy of Holland’s wartime occupation by the Nazis without being too frightening for children. Offsets this with courageous and exciting deeds by the children to do their part to help their country during times of great suffering. Brings to life the beauty and haven of having good, loving parents and a faith that sustains, partly by addressing head on the questions about why God doesn't intervene and why we mustn't hate our enemies.

A good childhood memory

My wife and I listened to this classic book from my childhood. It was one we read to our own sons and now our grandson has read it, too. We enjoyed it immensely. It is a book of hope in spite of war.

very enjoyable listen

My kids (5th and 8th grades) are learning about WWII and we listened to this story to supplement the history books. the story tells of a Dutch family during the war, and really brings to life the day to day issues faced by one family, who happens to run a windmill. We all enjoyed this well-told and well-read story and would definitely recommend it.
