Publisher's summary

My name is Amy Gumm - and I'm the other girl from Kansas.

After a tornado swept through my trailer park, I ended up in Oz.

But it wasn't like the Oz I knew from books and movies. Dorothy had returned, and she was stealing magic from the land. The Wizard was back. Glinda could no longer be called the Good Witch. And the Wicked Witches who were left? They'd joined forces as the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked, and they wanted to recruit me.

My mission? Kill Dorothy.

And when a group of former - possibly still - Wicked Witches tells you to do something, it's kind of hard to say no. Except my job as assassin didn't work out as planned. Dorothy is still alive. The Order has vanished. And the home I couldn't wait to leave behind might be in danger.

Somehow, across a twisted and divided land, I have to find Nox and the rest of the Order, protect the true ruler of Oz, take Dorothy and her henchmen down - and try to figure out what I'm really doing here. But in a place where the line between good and evil shifts with a strong gust of wind, who am I supposed to trust?

And who is actually Wicked?

Good sequel to Dorothy Must Die

The Wicked Will Rise is the second novel in Danielle Paige’s reimagining of L Frank Baum’s Oz in which Dorothy has turned evil. Some of you who read my review of the first novel, Dorothy Must Die, may remember that I had a few issues with it, notably the pacing and the audiobook production. I am happy to say I found no such issues with the sequel. I found the pacing much more lively and consistent and it kept me listening along. I would strongly suggest that you read the e-novella The Wizard Returns beforehand - it’s not strictly necessary, but it will fill in a few blanks.

The protagonist, Amy Gumm, continues to be kickass and engaging and I loved hearing the continuation of her story. I found some of the situations and emotional problems she has to deal with very well done. The narrator, Devan Sorvani, once again did an excellent job of bringing her to life and the production was much better this time in that there were no annoying long pauses between paragraphs.

What I particularly enjoyed about this book was that it took the story in a completely different direction - and a new and interesting direction - than what I had been expecting. It’s always excellent when an author can surprise you. I really look forward to book three now.

I picked up The Wicked Will Rise in both Kindle and Audible format and gave it five stars out of five.

Can tell it’s the 2nd book of a series but still good

When listening to this book there is a lot of filler. You can tel the book has fallen into the 2nd book of a series curse. Don’t get me wrong still a good story and I enjoyed it but honestly a lot of it didn’t need to be written.
Of coarse I will continue with the series the story in its entirety is too entertaining not to.

Wait, theres more!?!?

Any additional comments?

I thought this was the second and final book to the series... I love these books and got to the end and paused and was like, wait... There is going to be more? UGGG sooo frustrating!!! When you love a book and you need to wait for it to be finished... Not to mention wait another year.... There's reasons why you should wait to read this series... Mostly because once you do... You will want to finish them all in one sitting!

Bad Ending

The whole bildup of the story was great, but the way it ended ruined the book.

Great story with horrible pace and filler!

All I could think about was Michael Peña's character in the movie Ant-Man. Every time Michael Peña would explain something to Paul Rudd's character... get to the point already. The character in the book Amy is portrayed as gullible, inexperienced, weak, and confused on who she is.... got it, no need to explain that nearly every chapter along with her multiple failures. Mark Twain said it best "I didn't have time to write a short letter, so I wrote a long one instead".

In conclusion to my thesis... I feel like I was punished for my purchase. Dorothy Must Die is 452 page's, The Wicked Will Rise is 293 page's, making that a grand total of 745 page's... and Dorothy is still alive.
